Worked on my laptop OK, but in the process re-installed a downgraded video driver for the built-in ATI Mobility Raedon HD 4250 that is so limited to effectively disable the laptop. The built-in 15.6" screen is 1024 x 576 or some such, and the driver supports only 1024 x 768 (which distorts and cuts off the bottom of the screen) or 800 x 600. The driver does not support driving an external display, and a principal function of the laptop is driving a projector to give presentations, and at home I use it on a KVM switch. So, it's only remaining function is to use it for email when away from home.
I backed out of an update to get the older Microsoft driver back (the latest ATI driver was for Windows 8.1, which stopped working on Windows 10 after about build 2004). If I can't get a workable driver in this laptop, I'll have to go to Linux on it.
EDIT: sfc.exe /scannow found several instances of a directory having ownership/security settings set twice. This does not seem consequential, but may (or may not) be helpful to Microsoft in their work in developing updates. I can produce these segments of the log on request.
EDIT: I found a way to get the ATI driver for Widows 8.1 to load again, re-enabling everything for the laptop. I'll put the intstructions on the thread for that problem.
