    hi
just updated my machine (w10 pro) with the latest monthly important updates. Im receiving a notification in WU that an update to version 20H2 is available and ready to install ("download and instal" link).

    My question:

Which update method would you recommend:
*) via external boot media: Boot-DVD or Boot-Stick.
*) via the link provided by Windows Update ("download and install")

I installed the last last 'big' update (build 2004) via external media (boot DVD): this method is being recomended by the most memebers/staff memebers here the win10 forum.

    thx !

Whether to do things via the Internet or from a downloaded file has always been subject for me with the speed of the Internet and whether I need to watch it or let it run while doing something else.

Glad for you. Still have not seen the Fall 2020 update on any of my five computers.

That only applies when attempting to do a repair install using an in-place upgrade (i.e. repairing a 20H2 install with a 20H2 ISO, or 20H2 bootable media).

It is not an issue upgrading from a previous version of Windows to 20H2.
Once again, I tried with MCT --- it is an upgrade. But I still am not allowed to keep anything! Trying from ISO and from USB. Never have had this issue before this build!

2004 can be updated to 20H2 by installing a small enablement package, the 20H2 features are already in your 2004 but are dormant. The enablement package just turns them on.

Windows Update is offering you the enablement package, this is very quick to install. There is absolutely no need to manually update from an ISO/DVD/USB stick. For 2004 20H2 is a minor update, use Windows Update if you want 20H2.

Windows 10, versions 2004 and 20H2 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. Therefore, the new features in Windows 10, version 20H2 are included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 2004 (released October 13, 2020), but are in an inactive and dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on through the “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that activates the Windows 10, version 20H2 features.

So, Bree, are you saying that the Windows 10 October 2020 release is already present and just needs the Enablement package to activate the remaining part of the features? I have been so confused about this all along. I have 20H2 19042.630 and have the aforementioned package. That means I have the full version of The Fall Update????

Yes, it's exactly the same as you would have got by doing a full update with the MCT or an ISO - only far faster to update and no windows.old created.

The feature update from 2004 to 20H2 just requires the enablement package to turn on the dormant features. It's a minor update which is why the major build number only goes up by 1, from 19041 to 19042. 2004/20H2 share the same cumulative updates, so you'd be on the minor build number .630 which ever one you had.

This minor update in the Fall was first introduced for the 1903 to 1909 feature update. Then the major build number 18362 went up to 18363.

Thank you for clarifying this for my brain!
