Microsoft no longer requires a WHQL testing fee, which used to be US$250 per operating system family. This fee covers both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions, if submitted simultaneously, and is non-refundable.

New HP Printer drivers pushed to 5 computers prevented printing

Not sure if this is related to this subject since it talks about blocking third party drivers from installing but thought I would post for information. Could be Microsoft just pushing new drivers.
Chiropractor office with 5 computers all running Windows 2004 and had the CU from last Tuesday installed. Monday, all 5 could no longer print to their HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fnw printer. I deleted each computers Printer, add a new printer, search found a couple of versions of the printer but not the right version until I selected printer not found and searched for an older printer, where it found the proper version of the printer and I then had to tell it not to use the current driver, but to use the old driver. This worked on all 5 computers, but I am concerned that Microsoft will hit them again, so I need to look into how to prevent this from happening again. Unfortunately, I was working on this during business hours and had to get them running quickly. I did not take time to look up what drivers had been installed or try to uninstall the new drivers. I can check it out further on the weekend if they don't get messed up again before then.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think that the enable/disable tutorial would only cover Windows Update, and not applications using their own installers.

He said the cause was the CU from last Tuesday. I believe it addresses that.

According to the topic article, the CU turns on the driver check and block function, which has nothing to do with enabling or disabling driver updates in Windows Update.

If Windows Update downloaded a new driver that passed the check, but didn't work, that would have nothing to do with the CU.

Best thing is for users to check with their hardware vendor for driver updates, as mentioned in the article.

In the meantime, users can try uninstalling the CU, and put updates on notify but don't download and install, either using Group Policy, or tools like Windows Automatic Updates Manager or Window Update MiniTool.
