About two weeks ago I found the computer had downloaded and installed the Windows 10 May 1903 update and wiped all my files. First I tried restarting and got nothing. Tried again and nothing. My computer looked like I'd just bought it--totally empty, nothing left except my screen password prompt. Properties of the C drive showed it practically empty. So I went into Security and Updates and rolled it back to the previous version. Presto, back in the pink and no more crying.
I think you misinterpreted the symptoms. If an update rollback showed all your files again then they were there all along.

If you want to find an explanation, I suggest creating a thread of your own in which you describe each observable symptom and key facts about your setup such as the nature of the user accounts on the computer & the locations of the user files.

Naturally, you might not be particularly interested unless it happens again.

    @hempatches
Sticking with build 1803 is not something you'd want to do.
Follow the advice above from Try3 and post your details on the Windows Update sub-forum
    https://www.tenforums.com/installation-upgrade/

It is important to dig out just what the issue was about the last upgrade attempt.

Thank you IronZorg89. One question: When 1903 wiped my files, nothing and I mean nothing was retrievable, all folders were invisible /appeared empty. Entire system looked brand new. If this happens again after doing the differential backups, how will I find these backup images if I save them to the hard drive?

I cannot tell you exactly what happened to your folders; in the past there was this issue with files & folders disappearing with a Feature Update (not sure if it were this one; probably another member in the forum can chime in) but it is never a good idea to put your system image backup on the drive or partition you are backing up. An external HDD should be in order for system image backup. I use MR (Macrium Reflect paid version, but you can use the free edition)

There was a problem with lost data on 1809 but I don't think rolling back recovered it. Agree about using MR free edition. You can't do incrementals but you can do differentials.

Thanks for the info. I was not sure which build (Feature Update) was involved with files & folders disappearance after installing it. LOL!

If I remember correctly it was in the specific case that a known folder such as pictures had been relocated but there were still documents in the old location. These were lost.

This is an odd 'error' reported by SFC after installing KB4512941.

With SFC /VerifyOnly it reported that there were errors, but none are shown if you view the CBS.log as per Option Five in the SFC tutorial.

When SFC /ScanNow was used it reported a sucessful 'repair', but CBS.log showed this:

    Code:
    2019-09-06 22:56:45, Info CSI 000002aa [SR] Repairing 0 components
2019-09-06 22:56:45, Info CSI 000002ab [SR] Beginning Verify and Repair transaction
2019-09-06 22:56:45, Info CSI 000002ac [SR] Repair complete
Ater apparently 'Repairing 0 components' SFC /VerifyOnly now reports no corruption.

This is entirely reproducible. Start with a machine on 1903, build 18362.295. It may (or may not) be relevant that mine have had Disk Clean-up run to clean up update backups before starting this. Run SFC /VerifyOnly to ensure that no corruption is reported. if the known 'Defender ' issues are reported repair them with DISM, restart and run SFC /ScanNow to eliminate these before continuing.

Install the optional cumulative update KB4512941 (OS Build 18362.329).

At this point SFC /VerifyOnly reports no corruption.

Run Disk Clean-up to clean up system files, cleaning up the update backups.

Now SFC /VerifyOnly will report corruption and SFC /ScanNow will make zero repairs, which will 'fix' the alleged 'corruption'.
