without any issue at all
- no way to stop download definitions (even if winupdate is disabled)
- no way to set download cadency
- nonfunctional exceptions
- zero control over file types & archives
- no way to set proxy
- no way to download definitions from local storage
- no password protection
etc etc etc
not to mention corporate functions like central status reporting, remote deploying & repairing, logical grouping, policies applying...
There are many reasons to prefer other AV over that MS crap.

And as I wrote here, that KB4493509 versus Avira issue is already resolved 4 days before, piepowder has different problem.
No of this means anything to me nor to most people.
You cannot know what other people need. You cannot command what is important for them even if they are minority.
Enterprise, yes, I can them needing total control but home users, no.
640 kB ought to be enough for anybody...
I want good protection delivered as needed.
Very practical in foreign country with limited data tariff.
----------------------------
Summary: I need good protection software which is under my control and which includes tools necessary for me.
Enterprises tend not to rely on AVs but build firewalls and DMZs.
Many employees work out of office, so corporates use both ways (and more) of protection.
I'm surprised you say that especially as a Gold / VIP Member / Guru
Even on my home machines, I'm still running Windows Pro mainly because i want full control over as many functions as possible. Therefore I choose to use a 3rd party AV/Firewall (Norton) to help get that control.
On the other hand, (playing Devil's Advocate here) most home users don't even know of the existence of TenForums and wouldn't know how to set up 3rd party programmes anyway For them an "out of the box" solution should do what's needed.
I must agree with @muchomurka's summary in #216..
