As long as people are giving their stats...

From 'Check for updates' to final desktop was 52 minutes. The 'Getting things ready/Downloading' phases combined totalled 8 minutes. The online portion 'Installing' was 29 minutes, and the offline installation phase was 15 minutes.

This was a very good installation time for me - I usually run closer to 90 minutes. I have pretty fast internet, but just a regular old spinner - I think folks with really fast installs must have an SSD...

    Hi folks

How long it takes to install isn't the most important thing here -- some people (including me) do it via UUPDUMP whereas others do it by WU which seems a bit more random in its success and seems also for people who use that method to take longer. The other thing about UUPDUMP is that you don't need to enrol into any of these programs either.

The main important thing is though "Does this build work" -- and so far unlike all the other FAST / SLOW / SKIPPY builds this one comes nearest to me thinking that maybe this build could be robust enough for day to day operations.

I slung out the SLOW build and the SKIPPY because of defects with VM's and language display issues but this one seems to have worked and runs efficiently too. Not bothered by cosmetic changes - the functionality of the OS is to me far more important.

    Cheers

Installed 18353 today and had two bumps at 99% Installing. I ran the batch file to stop, clean and restart WU and rebooted the computer...the install worked and upgraded to 18353 and I created an ISO. It was frustrating and took a little time.

Speed of installation is not in and of itself very important. I suspect that MS would prefer that no one even know they're getting an update until asked to restart to finish the update. I do think it's good that the offline portion has been shortened significantly, and it's interesting to get some data points.

Also, remember that the Insider Program does not exist simply to provide you and me with the latest Windows - it's for us to test and provide feedback. The argument could be made that if you can't be bothered to sign up for the program, and provide feedback, you shouldn't be running the builds.

In any case, since the vast majority of people will not be using UUPDump or otherwise acquiring ISO files from which to install, I feel it's good to get a sense of how the WU mechanism is developing, and provide feedback when there are issues, such as the WU process hanging, or bouncing, or some of the other glitches we've seen.

While I like this build a lot I've started getting the odd ESENT error.

    svchost (3644,R,98) TILEREPOSITORYS-1-5-18: Error -1023 (0xfffffc01) occurred while opening logfile C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log.

Well it would throw an error as that path doesn't exist. I'll definitely do a clean install when the final version is released, in the meantime any ideas anyone?

I've had to use UUP Dump the last two CUs on my Laptop because Windows Update doesn't show them to me and I'm too impatient to wait. Worked great both times.

My Laptop had the Settings header, Friendly dates but no expanding Start menu icons prior to this last update. Now has none of them.
My VM via WU had no Settings header, Friendly dates and expanding Start menu icons and that's what it still has.

    Hi there
even though you don't have to sign up using UUPDUMP don't forget that data is sent back to Ms so Ms does get info on how these builds perform in any case. Exactly what data Ms gets I don't know and I'm not really bothered as I'm sure its only technical stuff and they aren't interested in personal data / passwords etc etc.

    @DooGie

IMO any 3rd party AV product - especially the FREE versions is totally unnecessary on HOME (not Corporate / work) computers -- WD works just fine and a lot of those Anti Virus programs were designed for last century's problems -- OS was poorly defended, new hacks were found etc. Today the whole OS is far better defended, definitions are updated almost daily and most of the attacks are in the form of SCAMS which can't be defended against by software rather than via technical attacks

The name of the game is making money and not simply infesting some individuals computer with malware -- and malware usually comes from dubious torrent sites - which in most countries are blocked anyway. OK it's easy to bypass these blocks but if you are "Computer Savvy" enough to do that then you are quite capable of making sure you don't get malware in the first place.

Also as a purely practical point - with these builds appearing quite frequently where we know Ms is doing things with the internals it would be almost impossible for these A/V companies to keep up with the changes - which might only be effective for a week or two before the next build.

I think you misread my post jimbo, I posted ESENT error not ESET error. Nothing to do with 3rd party AVs. Error ESENT Event ID 413 LoggingRecovery - Microsoft Community

    Hi there @DooGie
    Yep misread

I think too much booze last (Saturday) night !!!!!

So far this build for me has been the best of all the various rings - I'll see what happens to the next fast build

BTW when updating to a NEW fast build can I just run the update (from an ISO) from this build or do I have to start again from my standard 1809 build and do the update from that build..

    Cheers
