Not sure if that´s a good idea.

Imagine shutting down machine one night after a bunch of automatic installs done in the background and then following morning machine won´t boot. Now try and get an audit trail to fix it.

Sometimes these automatic or idiot proof settings are really hard to unravel when things break and they will break too.

Just look at the nonsense and problems with latest versions of Outlook in configuring any sort of non standard email accounts and currently the only way you can get to proper manual setup is in the control panel mail via the outlook applet. If that goes then you are really hosed up.

Maybe I´m old fashioned but I do like to know whats being done on my computers.

Well, I would follow the advice after an update to restart

Shutting down when an update is ready to be installed is not the way to go with W10 unless you have disabled fast shutdown (upgrades, not updates, reset it IME).

Little fanfare to go with these pearls of wisdom, usually we find out the hard way.

As for email, use the dedicated app or client for the eco-system.

Apple device email works exactly as you describe also, yet doesn't come in for criticism as broadly.

Lately they've been reissuing updates of the same number with missing components so I wonder how many more they will do this to? I have at least two instances of the same kb number installing more than once.

You get KB890830 every month. There's nothing unusual, the KB numbers must mean something to MS.

Reissuing, revising or updating a patch is normal. There's nothing unusual with it, the build number also means something and that is a simple increment whereas the upstream branching will allow for 'gaps' in the nomenclature and probably indicate where seperate elements were 'at', at the point of release.

not always possible -- work etc type emails usually require outlook 2016 -- any sort of web mail is usually an anathema to security conscious businesses as well -- also in general web / browser based emails are hideous in the extreme and often riddled with ads.

Thunderbird is "almost possible" but they are going down that wretched "auto config" route.

I'd love to get hold of the person who first started that auto config trend for email clients and have him / her chained up outside for two days in the middle of a cold Reykjavik mid winters night !!!!.

Why on earth break something which has been working perfectly OK for Donkeys Years and replace it by the hideous cludge they have now. I can't think of anybody who requested that particular feature -- setting up emails the old way was perfectly easy - plenty of simple instructions on how to do it.

Also to Outlook users who want to use work exchange servers on home computers -- how in the world do you set them up if the email address isn't "in the public domain".

i just switched to zoho.com email and love it. they have a desktop program as well.
