Help me to decide on HyperV type and/or Macrium Reflect viBoot

    I have:
    Windows 10 x64 Pro
Macrium Reflect v8 (v8.1) - creating full image files on weekly basis, incremental images each day.
VMware Workstation Pro v15.5 (2 Windows 10 VM's: one a clean Windows, no applications installed and one with some regularly used applications installed)

No server matters, no NAS-things, no Linux, it is all straightforward Windows 10 on a local PC.

Don't want to update VMware any more (*) and I am considering to move over to HyperV (or viBoot??)
I know there is a VMware Workstation Player. Regretfully it does not support snapshots.
(*) am using Workstation occasionally only, to test/try an application. After that, restore a snapshot.

When switching to HyperV there is a HyperV type1 and type2.
I believe I've read somewhere that for local/individual use, type1 (direct access to hardware) is preferred(?)
    Not sure though.

Then I stumbled over an article from Kari about viBoot (new to me, never considered to check this out).
Macrium viBoot - Create Virtual Machine using Macrium Image

Q: Based on the above, any advice on how to proceed? What would be the best option? HyperV type 1?

    Thanks!

There are two types of Hypervisor, Hyper-V is a Type 1 Hypervisor, your VMWare Workstation is a Type 2 Hypervisor. More explanation and comparison here:

Ten Forums | Hypervisor Type 1 and Type 2

Another (free) Type 2 Hypervisor is Oracle VirtualBox, that one does have a Snapshot feature. In Hyper-V they are called Checkpoints.

Macrium viBoot is not itself a hypervisor, it requires that you already have Hyper-V or VirtualBox installed. What it does is create a virtual machine on top of your Reflect image for your Hyper-V or VirtualBox. Support for VirtualBox is new for Reflect v8.1, Reflect v8.0 or earlier only supported using Hyper-V.

    I'll check out Hyper-V type 1.

I gave viBoot a try, using the last full image backup. After entering my Windows login password (normally this is disabled, i.e. I don't have to enter a password) I got an error: "Your device is offline. Please sign in with the last password used on this device."
Then whilst waiting for a while, it continues the launch of Windows, ultimately show the desktop like this...

When clicking [OK] this was the result..

I tried a few times, each time the same results. So I let viBoot rest.

You can only use viboot of hyper-v or virtualbox is preinstalled and working.

    So OP you want to

    A. backup your Win10 installation with Marcium Reflect.

B1. Turn it into a VM to be used by a VM emulator.
    and or

B2. Take your backup to a physical drive and load it within the VM emulator.

    ................

Hyper-V is Microsofts built in VM-emulator presented in Windows 10 P and E only ( unless somebody wants to correct me but possibly H ).

    V-Box
    Vmware

Are both independent programmers who makes a product for various uses.

Why not VMware 16? I think it is on 19 right now ???

You should be able to convert your back up to something that Hyper-V, VMware, or V-box is able to use.

It is like how I want to run XP Ultimate with Windows 10 within whichever VM emulator.

    Should be doable.

Your viBoot VM does not have an internet connection, as shown by the 'globe' icon in the system tray. That's why you are getting all these 'you're offline' errors.

When creating a VM with viBoot the default is not to connect the VM to the network. When setting up the VM in viBoot, under Hyper-V VM Setting configure the network adapter to use the Default Switch.
