Best VM engine to run WXP?

I have a couple old version applications that only will run in Windows XP.

I'd like to know what options I have for Ten. It supposed to run in only one machine (my own) and I don't need nothing fancy, basically:

    1) Install and run Windows XP Pro
    2) Share USB ports and clipboard between XP and Ten

    Free stuff welcome!

    Thanks!

I just figured that Ten has its own virtualization method (Hyper-V) and do not need any third-party stuff...

I ended giving up about Hyper-V because it didn't provide me free clipboard action among host and guests (only text that for me is not enough as I need to move files around). Regardless the expensive license cost of VMWare I decided to stick to it.

Even so due to some settings Windows 10 will complain when you try to run VMWare so it may be a bit puzzling for some users. I figured how to workaround it though and offer the solutions in the following thread for whose may be interested: Clipboard between host and Hyper-V guest not working

Rather than using a clipboard, you could create a network connection between the Win XP guest and the Win 10 host. It's not quite as convenient as direct clipboard access but it gets the job done.

Also, as an alternative to VMware Workstation Pro, you could use VMware player. It has some limitations. For example, I believe that it only allows one VM to run at a time, but for your needs that may be sufficient and it's totally free.

I tried to connect host and guest using RDC but couldn't make it work in any way. There would be another way? About the VMWare, yes, you're totally right.

VirtualBox should also work well with XP.
They added drag and drop a while ago (though not working on all guests) and clipboard should work too. Then there is the shared folder option, best anyway when dealing with large files between host-guest.

On Hyper-V the XP episode has more thriller to the setup. So far I learned and accepted to use the default vmconnect interface without sound, the easy way. Tried RDP, works after some firewall changes but has its hiccups regarding sound (at least it works) but there is clipboard and usb redirection this way.

    Hi there
If you are conversant with Linux you could run KVM/QEMU on a Linux Host and an XP VM machine on that.
Otherwise any free virtualisation system should work -- though to install USB drivers etc on an XP VM running under HYPER-V is challenging IMO to say the least.

For Windows using VMWare player is fine but remember to "boot into the firmware" --Ie to select boot device after installation you need to change 1 line in the .vmx config file - I've posted in this forum how to do that --you'll have to search for it -- also sharing HDD's between Windows/ other NAS systems and the XP VM needs a small vmx config modification as well as enabling SMB1 on the Windows hosts.

HYPER-V also won't run (although I believe it can be made to) on Windows Home edition either.

On the Windows XP VM you can also connect to it remotely via RDP or VNC.

    Cheers

    Thanks all!

In my case VMWare appeared as the most straight forward solution so I decided to stick to it.
