Hyper-V does not use SATA. You don't need XP with SATA.
Simply create a Gen 1 VM, the old type... and it allows you to install anything from Win2k/XP/Vista/7 on IDE drive. Keep it simple.

That works without problems when you create new VM and install from scratch.
The problem is when you convert P2V, as the OP case, but in particular for Hyper-V you'll need to move back from SATA to IDE. That way you can convert your VM from other hypervisors to boot properly without BSODs.

However installing XP from scratch in my case wouldn't be what I'd want to do -- most of those old programs I'd use on the Windows XP system (and actually using) have long since disappeared from my storage -- and even the vendors are no longer in business so there was no choice other than the P2V method which I did years ago and kept the VM.

However you can using XP version SP3 with the last Ms update (I think it was around 2015) and nlite the SATA AHCI drivers to slipstream the OS create an installable iso with SATA drivers.

I tested the XP VM by creating a second Virtual Disk (IDE) and copying the system to it. It wouldn't boot so I decided not to waste any more time on that -- but at least I "had a go".

I REALLY have no plans to run xp on Hyper-v! I'Il probably get an iso of win 7 sp 1, ( mines not udated), and redo the Hyper-V with that, then mess w/the program.

I learned what I needed to Re: Hyper-v, ty, again...

I was up at 5 AM as well, adding my most used commands to the ''run'' box, and disabling some stuff via the group policy editor, and services, to get rid of some pesky errors in the event viewer etc.. pretty sad huh?

As far as creating windows image backup files, like my best friend told me 32 years ago when he threw a DOS 2.0 machine at me, and all accompanying books, ''look it up''

I'll mark the thread as solved, soon, I'm sure I still need some more answers...

I miss Blake Stone and the cartoon Wolfenstein guy, I played those before DOS Box , I still have them on xp, but never play them anymore with all the real life 3rd person shooters...

I thought I mentioned it, it installed no problem from win7 disk, right after I posted the DOS images yesterday, and did custom.

Now that you got it rolling Hyper-V, I don't have anything more to add.

I've gotten 4-5 of my legacy games up and running on win 10, 1 to go, Return to castle Wolfenstein... I have like a million hrs. on msft flight sim, every iteration of the game. Adding airports, planes, scenery etc., (25+years, from DOS VERSION TO FSX) not to mention creating the videos,, lotsa editing software, probably obsolete by now.

Taking off is, easy, landing not so much,
