    So, just to be clear.
    1) I need to change my old user account name to some dumby name (like "delete this") and then
    2) I can use the local account transfer function to move from my Microsoft account,
    3) My new local account with my desired user name will have all my settings and files, and the reference to the Microsoft account will be gone?

    Thanks.

I think all of that's been covered... several times.

No, we're not talking about a 'new' account - that's the one you say you have now that's a MS account.

My understanding is you want to change THAT account- an existing account from a MS account to a local one.

As you want to use the same name as another account (which you don't want) you can rename the user for that unwanted account (or delete it) so you can use that user name again, when changing the existing MS account to a local one.

You have all the tutorials you could reasonably need, I believe.

    I think I see why I'm confused, it's semantic.

I see it as a "new" account because I've been thinking that a local account is distinct from the Microsoft account, and therefore a new account is being created and the Microsoft account is being closed.

You're saying it's the "same" account because I assume in your mind it's just modifying an existing Microsoft account and making it a local account, so the account itself is the same but it's "state" is changing.

I think I got it now.

Yes, you've got it now. You can (and I often do) switch from a Local account to a MS account, and back again. It is always the same account, the same user folder, and the same appdata. It is just the type of account that you are changing. When you switch from MS to Local it just asks you to set up a local password, but what you will be signing into is still exactly the same account.
