FORGOTTEN PASSWORD To gain access to Laptop

    Hi,

I reset a password for my friend. My friend didn't write it down and neither did I. It has been a coup[le of years.
    Model
The password involves the start page. Laptop works fine. It is an Asus, Model X55M1, with Win10 installed.

I have the original disc that came with the laptop.

Can I just insert the disc and treat it like a whole new installation. ? It doesn't contain any files that my friend cares about.

Or is there another way for me to wipe out everything on this laptop, and then reload the OS using the original disc ?

    Frustrated.

    Thanks for looking.

You can clean install Windows 10 this will delete all data on the hard disk.

    Bruce,

Are you talking about a local user account or an MSAccount-linked user account?
I assume you are being logged in automatically [by having previously set up NetPlWiz] but you want to sort things out properly.

If it is a local account you can use Change account password - TenForumsTutorials where I think you will need Option 5.
If it is an MSAccount-linked user account, use When you cant sign in to your Microsoft account with Reset your password

You won't need to reinstall anything.

    Hi Dennis,

To tell the truth, I must profess ignorance

When all this started I went through the following steps:.
    1) Turn on the laptop picture of a fjord appears.
    2) A left click on the screen causes the user name to appears with the password box under it.
    3) Anything(or nothing) typed into the password box, with a tap to the enter key then brings the command to try again.

See, I can't seem to get anywhere except I somehow(during my efforts to try variations of the password hint) ended up getting a screen that was related(I think) to BIOS.
That allowed me to go through some settings(administrative?) and choose a password. I chose to do that.
    Aha I thought.
All that did was give me a log in command box(for which I created a password) .
So now, instead of the 3 steps above I have to log in to get to the 3 steps above. A step I didn't have to do before.

What I'm trying to say is this(after all my fumbling about): that I still do not know the difference between a
local user account or an MS account-linked user account.

All i know, at this point, is that I am stuck at step 3 and really am not sure what to do except maybe have my fiend reach out to ASUS.

I made a mistake in my first post. I do not have the OS disc. I have the ASUS DVD suite. I mistakenly assumed it was an OS disc. I talked to my friend and was told that her laptop came preloaded with Win10.

    DVD suite listings
    -Power 2go8
    -E-Green
    -ASUS Firmware Update
    -Quick Install Guide

Thanks for your reply sir. I do appreciate it.

    Regards,
    Bruce

Sounds like you installed a BIOS settings password which a clean install of Windows will not clear.

I agree with NavyLtCdr above. The repeated password steps you refer to do sound as though you have set up something that is additional to a normal user account password.

    Either
    - take & post some photographs of your screen from the moment of booting so the situation can be better understood
    or
    - get somebody round to look over your shoulder as you boot.

Search the interwebs, I inherited a win10 unit and I did not know the password. Found a solution on the internet, reset win10, got in, then reset the password, been good to go ever since.... you do not have to reinstall...

Hi FreeBooter, Denis, Jacee and baldyfeathers

@FreeBooter: Excellent link. I like it.

    @Denis:
    Excellent link.
I'll take a pic, but I agree with NavyLtCmdr that I created a bios pass.

    @Jacee:
    Excellent link
. If I cannot find a simpler solution I am going to end up there.

@baldyfeathers: Do you recall the link you found, or what parameters you used in your search?

Thanks to each and every one of you for taking the time to help. I feel pretty confident that my solution is with one, or more, of your replies.

I will let you know how it pans out.

    Best, Bruce
