Gaining permission to an old hard drive files

    Hi.

I have an old hard drive with which I decided to copy it's data to a new HDD, I had a OS installed on it (probably windows xp) when I decided not to use it.

Now that I decide to copy its data from C drive, It says you don't have access and you need to fix the premission through Security tab. It is annoying to do this for every file.

So I decided to do this for the Whole C drive, and checked "apply this to sub-folders", but when I check this option, it shows "You don't have premission access the folders".

But I could change the premission of a signle file or folder, How can I solve this problem?

    One way would be:
First take Ownership of old Drive through Right Click /Security.
Change Owner of File, Folder, Drive, or Registry Key in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
Option 4: (especially see, Replace owner of subcontainers and objects for ownership to apply to all folders and subfolders)

Then after ownership has been applied, Right Click/Security, and apply full permissions to old Drive.
Change Permissions of Objects for Users and Groups in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
Option 6: (especially check option to apply to this folder, subfolders and files)

OR: Wait for one of the TenForums Guru to show you how to do it with a couple of simple commands from an admin Command Prompt.

This is happening to me in 2021, I made an external hard drive and I can’t take ownership of the drive.
It denied permissions to access my user folders where I have the info. Read and write.

Welcome to posting on Ten Forums (I see you've been a 'silent' member for some time).

You could side-step the permissions problem and copy the files from the old drive without changing permissions. If you run TreeSizeFree as an administrator it will have full access to all the folders. You can explore the drive in TreeSizeFree, right-click on the files and/or folders in TreeSizeFree and select Copy, then paste them to wherever you want on your C: drive in File Explorer. I prefer to use the Portable Apps version...

    Hello Bree!

Thanks for your answer, I just started on Ten Forums and I look forward to interact with all of you as much as times allow it!

I have just tested it, and I think I should buy you dinner or something, side stepping it’s the way to go, it took me 3 hours yesterday from playing with permissions and this took like 1 second.

    Thank you so much Bree.

    Honestly, thanks 🙏🏻
