    Hello Brink,

Hopefully you can help? Possibly a bit of a strange one, but, somehow my photo viewer (Honeyview) has become associated with my Veracrypt .file types and I cannot undo it.

No idea how this has happened? I've never (to my knowledge) even double-clicked my Veracrypt files, let alone right-click and "open with" another program, but here I am! Things I've tried:

    1. The old trick of creating a notepad as a dummy .exe, then trying to "open with" that, breaking it. Did not work.

    2. Uninstall Honeyview, restart, that works temporarily, however as soon as install Honeyview again it auto associates with it. See pic.

Without Honeyview installed, here's what I see in settings and the default .file:

    With Honeyview installed:

Any ideas? I'd rather not have the Honeyview icon if possible?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

Check in Registry Editor (regedit.exe) to see if you have the key below for that "." file type?

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.

If you do, delete it's UserChoice subkey to remove it's app association.

If you don't have the above available, then you can see if using option one in this tutorial may clear it.

    How do,

Thanks for the quick reply. I do have that key, but no UserChoice subkey:

I'll give resetting it a go. Fingers crossed!

    Thanks.

Edit: Nope. Even resetting and a restart, with Windows Photos the default, it still shows Honeyview for that file type. Weird.

Ok. In that case, let's go nuclear and delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\. (dot) key itself to remove all user assigned associations for it.

Deleted it in the Registry, restarted, it no longer shows in the registry. Weirdly, it still shows in Windows Settings:

    Try comparing
Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10-1.jpgRestore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10-2.jpg

    Another possible approach:
    - use a 3rd party uninstall tool to uninstall Honeyview.

    E.g. Geek uninstaller, Revo...

These run the standard uninstaller then check for leftovers. You will see what's found and then have the choice of deleting it.

    Hello, dalchina,

Well, the one in my current user is gone as I deleted it as per above. My Root shows this:

Safe to delete? I've been taking incrementals while tinkering so no big deal if anything goes wrong.

Yes, I use BC Uninstaller, got rid of Honeyview multiple times and all leftovers, no joy.

    Edit: typo

You could export the key to a REG file as a backup to be safe, but it should be safe to delete it.

I don't know what the uninstaller you mention does, but does it
    a. run the standard installer

    then additionally

    b. scan for leftovers

    then
    c. present the leftovers for you to review?

If it doesn't do all those steps, it's unlikely to be of help.

Yes, it runs the uninstaller, creates a restore point, then scans for leftovers, gives the option of a registry backup. It even gives the leftovers a "confidence" rating, good - bad. It hides the option to delete bad confidence things by default in case of issues, but you can delete everything it finds. Really good and has been very handy.

I'll try Brink's key backup method shortly.
