As a Home Edition user, I advise you not to disable the Windows Update service but to disable the auto-update function by setting all connections as metered.
Thank you for your thoughts
I guess part of my question was to understand (for my own edification) if that works in Windows Home edition. I wasn't necessarily going to completely disable.
Working in IT all of these years, I want to decide what updates are installed and when. I have the Pro version on mine and that allows me to have much more control and was unaware that I could completely disable updates or disable the auto updates In the Home version

net stop wuauservsc config "wuauserv" start=disabled
The above commands completely disable the Windows Update service in my Home Edition.
After running the registry trick, is the update settings still supposed to say that updates will be downloaded and installed automatically?
Hello besweeet, :)
Yep, it'll still say that even though automatic updates has been disabled. It won't automatically download and install updates unless you manually check for updates.
Hello folks, am not as super technical as you all here.
Just found this posts and is what I have been looking for, to disable automatic update, install and reboot.
I download the updates with offline down loader and install, update and reboot at my time due to the type
of work I do.
I prefer the Option Two at the beginning of the original post. This is the desktop reg download
My question is, how would I make sure it works. I have applied the "Never Notify . . . ". I have restarted
and moved on. There is no indicator the reg app is active. Message #404 kinda make me feel uneasy.
I sure would like to be sure it is working in some way.
Thanks.
