    Hello Shawn,

When I use option 1 is this supposed to create a Microsoft account as another user account on the PC? This didn't happen. I use Malwarebytes firewall and I accidently did not let some traffic through related to the creation of the MS account and I wonder if this has caused the issue. I will try again.
Correct. Option 1 to add a Microsoft account as a new account on the computer, and option 2 to switch a current administrator local account to a Microsoft account.

    Hi Shawn,

If I chose option 2 "switch local account to Microsoft account" to get the digital license activation and then switch it back to a local account does the original local user account remain intact? Does any alteration of the user profile take place during the switch to a MS account other than the sign in method?

It should still remain linked to the Microsoft account.

It did not remain linked to my Microsoft account, and I had to enter my product key to activate Windows 10 after a motherboard change in 2018.

Try restoring Windows to a point before using option 2. Switching it back to a local account broke the link between my account and the digital license. See my post: Windows 10 Activation questions

Well, that stinks. One reason I like to keep the product key number written down and kept in a safe place.

The following is the consequence of switching it back to a local account:
