    Hey phrab,
Check the following in Window Services ... change if necessary and try to start DNS Client
Remote Procedure Call (RCPS) | Running and startup type Automatic
TCP/IP Netbios Helper | Running and startup type Manual
WorkStation | Running and startup type Automatic

Note: If you can't start DNS Client, then reboot and try again.

Thank you for the reply. I tried these & rebooted, but DNS Client is still disabled & there's no option to enable it. Perhaps it's no longer necessary for networking...I don't know.

I can now see under My PC/Networking the following image, but still don't know how to share those files with XP. And Win 10 doesn't seem to see XP.

Correction: I can now put shorcuts on my WinXP machine to point to my Users & Phil profiles. However, Win10 still doesn't see my WinXP machine & I'm not sure why. I mapped the drives in XP, just as I did in Win10 & shared the folders.Turn On or Off Network Discovery in Windows 10-2-network-places.png
So I'm not sure what has to changed in WinXP (or in Win10) for Win10 to see WinXP. Any suggestions?

    @phrab,

You might check Option One in the tutorial below to see if it may help with file sharing.

You may need to enable SMB1 in W10 since you're trying to share with XP.

Thank you again for your reply.
    1. I checked the status of SMB1 & found that it was enabled. Actually, after reading about the ransomware issues, I don't know if I should disable it. I would like to keep my WinXP ability to have access to Win10 files, but what a disaster if I got hacked.

    2. In your 2nd suggestion, it says to enable Network discovery. That was my initial problem that I mentioned in Turn On or Off Network Discovery in Windows 10 (#7 above). When I put a checkmark in "Turn on Network Discovery" (& automatic setup) & then save changes, it immediately goes back to the previous screen. When I check again, the option wasn't saved, so I'm in a catch 22. I'm not sure how to keep the option saved. And I'm not sure why Win10 will share with WinXP, but WinXP can't share with Win10.

    Hey phrab,
    Try this ...

    Open Command Prompt as Admin
    sc config Dnscache start= auto

Reboot PC and check if it's running by looking in Windows Services or using the following command.

    Open Command Prompt as Admin
    sc query Dnscache

Note: All my DNS Client options are greyed out as well. I just never noticed because mine's startup type is Automatic and it's Running.

Thank you for the suggestion. When I ran: sc config Dnscache start= auto, I got this message:

I don't know if there's a registry tweak or something that I can do to enable it.

    Yea, there is ...
    1. Navigate to the following key and set Start to 2
    2. Reboot PC

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Dnscache

Thank you so much. My DNS Client is now set to Automatic(Trigger Start) & is running. Also, the turn on network discovery is on (see image).

However, I'm still not out of the woods. When I go to This PC/Map Network Drive or "Add a network location", it still won't find my WinXP machine. I put in:
\\XP computer name\\C:\Documents & Settings\UserName (but used the actual computer & usernames) & it says "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid". Maybe I'm not enclosing something in quotes or have something else wrong, but I know my XP computer name, so I must still be doing something wrong.

What is the exact share name on the xp computer, but I think it would be \\XPCOMPUTERNAME\USERNAME if you shared your UserName folder?

Thanks, again for the suggestion. The share name is Phil & I've tried \\XPCOMPUTERNAME\Phil & got the error message. I went to my XP machine & the Phil folder is set to be shared. I looked in the Firewall Settings for XP (see below), but that didn't mention any exceptions other than programs. So I still don't know if it's a setting in WinXP or Win10.
