Hi Brink. Thanks for the quick response. Maybe I did back up the system files to the recovery drive. It's been 2 years and I just don't remember. If I clik on troubleshoot will I be able to get back to Use a Device to use my recovery drive?
Oh yes. If you don't see it in Troubleshoot, you can click on the back arrow button at the top left to go back to "Choose an option" for "Use a device".

Nope. No luck. even with the usb drive in place I still get no further than the logo screen with the dots going in circles. I can't even get back to the blue choose option screen. Guess I'll have to pay LG the $500 they want to fix my 2 year old computer. Thanks for the help.

hi I wish I knew what I was trying to do. Just get it to work I guess. Now I got the blue screen by hitting the f10 key.And I can get to the reset this PC screen. but it won't take the password for the account. Even tho I know the password is good because I just used it for ten forums password reset. So I'm stuck on that reset this PC screen.

If all else fails, you could clean install Windows 10.

Be sure to back up anything you do not want to lose first since a clean install will wipe everything.

Recovering after Upgrade from Home to Pro

I have a machine that came with Win 10 Home on it. I immediately created a USB recovery drive. I then created a system image. This was to represent my doomsday start over point. It was fortunate that I did that since I've had to roll back my machine to day 1 shortly after Acronis True Image failed.

Last night I upgraded Win 10 Home --> Win 10 Pro. And as a side note, I was so disappointed to learn that the minute you buy it through the Microsoft Store, you have to install it. There's no download, no "do it later", you have to do it now.

Anyway, I'm trying to prepare for a doomsday scenario under PRO. Do I still need to create a new recovery drive? If so, should I use the original USB stick recovery drive I created in HOME and just overwrite it? Is the original recovery drive of any use to me should I need to rebuild from day one, or is that no longer an option once I've upgraded? OR... will the old recovery usb drive still do everything I would need, and if necessary, I just restore the new Win 10 PRO image(s)?

I guess another way of asking is: once upgrading to Pro, are my original Windows Home drive image and recovery drive of any use?

Also, what's going to happen when I choose "reset this PC"? Will it reset to Home or Pro?

    Hello @Silky,

Yes, you can use your Windows 10 installation USB instead. It also contains WinRE.

The Recovery Drive only contains WinRE unless you check the Back up system files to the recovery drive box to be able to reset Windows 10.

If you reset Windows 10, it will be the same edition you currently have installed.

I would just create a new Windows 10 installation USB using the latest version to use.

I'm getting lost in terminology. I don't know that I HAVE a Win 10 Installation USB. The machine didn't come with one certainly as it's an Acer with Windows 10 Home pre-installed. Now, I created a recovery drive on a USB and then made a system image...

The Recovery Drive only contains WinRE unless you check the Back up system files to the recovery drive box to be able to reset Windows 10.
How can I verify whether or not I included system files on the original USB Recovery drive?

If you reset Windows 10, it will be the same edition you currently have installed.
Is that true regardless of which method I use to reset? Say for example I choose reset from within windows system settings. If I understand you right, that would reset me to win PRO. Would that be a fresh install of Pro? On the other hand, if I put in my original usb recovery drive and boot to that, if I reset, would it reset to Pro, even though it was created with Home?

I would just create a new Windows 10 installation USB using the latest version to use.
So again, would I overwrite the original usb recovery drive or should I get a new usb stick and use that? Will the old one do me any good?

Or am I making this too complicated because I'm not tracking on the subtleties of installation USB v Recovery USB?

    @Silky,

Basically, a recovery drive will only let you boot to recovery options (aka: WinRE), and will only let you be able to use it to reset Windows 10 if you checked the Back up system files to the recovery drive box.

A Windows 10 installation USB will do all of the above, but can also be used to clean install Windows 10 (Home or Pro).

I would recommend to create a Windows 10 installation USB overriding your current USB. No need to use a new USB unless you just wanted to.

Of course, also always keep up to date system images.
