Must files be within folders? (OneDrive subfolders)

With regard to my copy/pasting something into the OneDrive folder
(apart from whatever OneDrive unilaterally may include in the OneDrive folder),
my understanding ofis that OneDrive uploads the something that I copy/paste. Nothing more would happen if I do nothing more. Note that none of A, B, C above describe that condition.
This does require OneDrive open, signed into OneDrive, and set to sync the folders/files you want though.

    Thanks.

In context of one computer and one user.
    my understanding now is :

I run local OneDrive application, and log into OneDrive account, I copy/paste a file from somewhere in local drive into local OneDrive folder, file thereby occupies disk space twice, end of story unless I take some action.

IF at some time while local OneDrive application is running and I am logged into account, I take some action that causes OneDrive to upload the file into its Internet server, then the file resides in three places; end of that story unless I take another action.

Then IF at some time, application open, logged in, I take an action to reduce space used by that file in local OneDrive folder, OneDrive deletes that file's content from OneDrive folder, leaves some or all of its metadata;; result being content both in original location of local drive and in server.
