    I don't blame you for that long.

    I just test the tutorial on my system to see if anything may have change in Windows 10 version 2004, but it still works for me.

    The Two things below are often a common mistake made that you might check again to make sure it's unblocked:

    1) The transparent.ico file downloaded from step 5 must be unblocked before moving it into the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

    2) Restart the explorer.exe process in Task Manger to apply, or sign out and sign in.

    If you like, here's a .reg file below you can download and merge to make sure the registry entries are correct for the C:\Windows\System32\transparent.ico file to see if it may help any.

    Shell_Icons.reg

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons]
    "179"="C:\\Windows\\System32\\transparent.ico"

    I have followed the regedit and transparent.ico procedure which has removed the compressed icon from Windows explorer, however I still see it in the occasional application - most often ones with their own file browser. Attached should be a picture from my Steam library which has a custom shortcut (non-steam game). You can see that the icon has the compressed icon. Is there any way of removing the icon in cases like these?

    Hello,

    I'm afraid this will not affect what a 3rd party may apply to an icon.

    Hey, I'm cleaning up my PC and removing all of the small corner icons on my desktop and this one hasn't gone away no matter what I try. I've done the decompressing method in properties and I've tried this method but nothing's worked. I also did this same method for the shortcut icon and that worked, so I'm not sure why it isn't working for this.

    Thank you! :)

    Hello, and welcome.

    Go ahead and post a screenshot showing this arrow to make sure it's the same for this tutorial. If not, then we may know another way.

    Hey,

    I just came home from work and it fixed when I turned my pc on. I'm not sure why it worked now because I restarted my pc plenty of times when trying different solutions. Thank you for the quick response though!
