    Hello Daniel, :)

In that case, see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed txt item in Option Two below may be able to restore it for you. It includes the full registry entries for .txt files in case something other than the "New" entries are missing.

This worked a charm for missing .txt and .rtf in desktop context menu->New! Thanks Brink.

My new HP laptop is missing the options for a new rich text document and new compressed zip file.

I downloaded and ran your reg file fixes under option but I see no change even after a restart. Why doesn't this work?

    Hey Steve,

Go ahead and post a screenshot showing your New context menu and where you're right clicking at to see if anything may stand out.

I discovered the fixes on Seven Forums work but the files here don't. Why? See New Context Menu - Remove & Restore Default Menu Items - Windows 7 Help Forums

Ah, I see. The ones at SF included the default associations with them while the ones here only included the context menu registry entries. I've updated this tutorial to also include the default associations from below for them.

The “Create new text document” option is missing from context menu, but only in certain folders: OS partition, Windows folder, Program Files, and probably other.
It is there if I create a folder in the OS partition.

    How can it be added?

    Hello Noob0225,

This is normal for system folders like these. Usually only New > Folder is available for them.

You are able to manually copy or move a text document to these locations though.
