Hi Brink, thank you. That command opens E:\Data\Contacts.
Please would you define your problem.
The diagrams show that your Contacts folder is a subfolder of E:\smudged and that is what you said you wanted, assuming that E:\smudged is actually the E:\Data folder that you referred to earlier on.
Is the problem the residual buttons?
What path does the Registry [RegEdit.exe] show at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
for the entry

I have not seen this before.
My only thoughts are of the fairly standard checks that you might have considered or even done already
- Reboot
- Drive Error Checking - TenForumsTutorials
- SFC-DISM - TenForumsTutorials
- Boot into Safe Mode - TenForumsTutorials - to see if the problem happens there too [I'd expect it to]
- Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - TenForumsTutorials - this does not affect user accounts as such but the problem might be a Windows/File explorer problem rather than account problem
Sorry I can't be more helpful,
Denis
@thowl,
In addition to what Denis posted, you might also see if you are able to change the folder template of the affected "E:\smudged" folder to a different template may remove the contacts toolbar.
Change Folder Template in Windows 10
Thanks for your help Brink and Denis. I have fixed it. I was looking around in the Folder Options dialogue box, I can't be sure but I think clicking the Reset Folders button did the trick.
If anyone comes to this thread looking for a solution to this (e.g. you accidently moved a special folder to a base directory and now the base directory is behaving as if its a downloads or contacts or whatever, but the files are still there) and using the batch files isn't fixing it, I found the solution on the Microsoft forums: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...e-ac67c26fbcfb
Briefly:
- Launch an Explorer window
- Click the "View" menu section on top
- Click "Options" then "Change Folder and Search Options"
- Click the "View" tab
- Scroll down about halfway and DE-select "Hide Proteced Operating System Files (Recommended)" and then hit ok to the warnings
- Go to the offending folder (The one that is correct but has the wrong name and display) and you should see a file called "desktop.ini". Delete it. (or copy it somewhere else but CHANGE THE EXTENSION FIRST or you will be spreading the problem.
- Refresh your Explorer window.
Your folder should have gone back to normal. (you may need to restart first).
