How to Extract Icon from File in Windows
You can use the free IconViewer utility program to view and save the icons contained within files, such as executable files and dynamic link libraries (DLLs).
When IconViewer is installed, it will add an Icons tab to the properties page of any file that contain icons.
While you must be signed in as an administrator to install IconViewer, all users will be able to use the Icons tab in the properties page of files that contain icons.
This tutorial will show you how to extract icons from files to save as a ICO, BMP, or PNG file in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
Here's How:
1 If you haven't already, you will need to download and install the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of IconViewer for your 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Windows. (see screenshot below)
2 Right click on the file (ex: "imageres.dll") you want to extract (save) an icon from, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)
3 Perform the following actions: (see screenshot below)
1) Click/tap on the Icons tab.
2) Select an available icon you want to extract and save.
3) Select an available pixel size (ex: "256x256") and bit quality (ex: "32-bit") you want for the select icon in Device images.
4) Click/tap on the Save (floppy disk) icon.
4 Perform the following actions: (see screenshots below)
1) Navigate to where you want to save the icon file.
2) Enter a file name you want for the icon file.
3) Select the Icon (*.ico), Bitmap Image (*.bmp), or PNG image (*.png) file type you want to save the icon file as.
4) Click/tap on the Save button.

5 When you are finished saving icons, click/tap on OK to close the properties page. (see screenshot below)
