Lost sound driver in HP Touchsmart AIO when upgrading from 7 to 10

I obtained this (rather older) desktop AIO with Win 7 and I just upgraded to Win 10. In the process, the sound driver disappeared. I have googled with nothing helpful turning up. I got a popup type message saying that no sound device (or words to that effect) could be found and it offered to diagnose. I have run the diagnostic with no cure offered and, not being very tech savvy, do not know what to do next. What information can I provide? I will be grateful for any assistance

There may not be a sound driver for W10 with that PC.

Get the sound driver for W7 and try installing it in compatibility mode.

I used the PC in your specs, sorry if that is not the correct device.

    Thank you both.

AddRam, I believe that is the correct model # which I took from documentation with the computer. Don't know how to confirm that on/in the computer itself.

For both, I downloaded the latest Win 8 driver which the URL provided (total of 2) and ran the .exe.

Clicking on the sound icon (lower right on lower bar) which has a red circle with a white X brings up an Assistant which ran it's troubleshooter with no solution found.

Under "Sound, video, and game controllers" that driver only shows "HP Webcam Splitter", but not the driver I downloaded.

Not sure if by running the .exe, it should have installed the driver or if I need to do more?

Edit Also do not know how to use/install with compatibility mode

    Hello @Odyssey42,

Can you please perform the following . . .

Check for ANY Problem Device Errors

[1] Click on this TenForums link => Batch Scripts / Programs.
[2] Click the direct download link Find_ANY_Problem_Devices.bat in the MENU.
    [3] Run the .bat file.

    • If you want detailed information about the .bat file then scroll down the thread until you get to the relevant section.

    If there are NO ERRORS:

You will receive the message NO PROBLEM DEVICES WERE FOUND!, and NO text file is created on the Desktop.

    If there are ERRORS:

There will be a Prob_Devices.txt file created on the Desktop.

    EITHER:

Copy & Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

[1] Open the Prob_Devices.txt file in Notepad.
[2] Press the Ctrl + A keys together.
[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
[5] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    Code:

    <<< Results Here >>>

    OR:

UPLOAD the file => How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums.

    I hope this helps.

Good news, I hope: "No problem devices were found". Not sure if this means there is no driver installed, or there isn't a problem with the driver, wherever it might be.

AddRam, Have done some research on compatibility installs, but maybe a bit advanced for me. I have run the latest Win 8 driver, but after it ran, I can find no trace of it.

Hoping you can guide me through it.

On the link that AddRam kindly provided:

I have found, downloaded and "installed" two W8 and one w7 driver. The "installed" is italicized because after the "installation" runs there is no evidence that I can find that they are on the computer. BTW this driver is named "Original IDT High Definition Audio Driver"

The sound icon in the lower left has a red circle with a white X. If I click on it, the assistant comes up and offers to help then bails at the end of it's analysis.

In task manager the only thing that shows under "Sound, video, and game controllers" is "HP Webcam Splitter"

I downloaded and installed the file that Paul Black recommended, but it did not find any problems (maybe because the driver isn't installing.

If anyone has any ideas, they will be gratefully received. Thanks.

Perhaps I should look for a more active forum. Any recommendations, anyone?

Maybe an external sound card could work

Are you thinking of a sound card that goes into one of the mobo slots? This HP Touchsmart is an All In One, and would need a special sort of sound card, so may not be a financially attractive option.

Or by "external" do you mean something else?

You can run decent quality sound circuitry through USB 3. Here's an illustrative (and eye-watering) story: The 12 best audio interfaces 2021: top audio interfaces for music-making and production | MusicRadar.
