I've made edits to the registry long before joining TenForums, buster.
But they assumed that you know what you are doing. You know that assume makes an ass out of you and me.

    Hi Rhiannon,

Instead of Shawn's excellent tutorial Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10, which denies installation of new drivers for all devices, you have a second option, to prevent installation of a specific device, in your case the Audio device.

You can start by looking at this article, on how this can be done.
I have been using this Group Policy setting to prevent Microsoft from updating my Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller Driver and it's been working flawlessly for the past couple of years.

Now this can be done through Policy Editor, by changing the setting "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs", but unfortunately you don't have it since you're on Windows Home.
If you want, you can download the Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet from Microsoft, to do exactly what the Group Policy Editor does, via Registry settings.

So I took the liberty to create the following two reg files, to enable and disable the setting.
In the Enable reg file, I presumed that your Audio device Hardware ID is "HDAUDIO\\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0235". If it's not, according to the steps followed in the article above, please open the reg file with notepad and change the last line with the correct Hardware ID.

    Attachment 256866
    Attachment 256865

    warning   Warning
Please have in mind that once you follow this solution you will not be able to update your driver, neither automatically via Windows Update, nor manually by applying a downloaded driver.
To be able to manually update your driver:
    1. Run the Disable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg
    2. Update your Audio driver and
    3. Run the Enable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg to prevent MS from updating it.

    HTH
OMG... thank you SO much! And yes, HDAUDIO\\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0235 is my HWID.

BUT, I just went in and checked Windows Updates and are TWO Realtek 8639.1 installs waiting.
    Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - MEDIA - 2/19/2019 12:00:00 AM - 6.0.1.8639 and
    Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Extension - 2/19/2019 12:00:00 AM - 6.0.1.8639.

That's after making that change in the registry by going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> SOFTWARE –> Microsoft –> Windows –> CurrentVersion –> DriverSearching and changing the value of “SearchOrderConfig” to 0.

Will your registry script work? I guess I should install them first, reinstall. disconnect from the internet and then run your disable file. Is this correct?

Yep... that's the way to do it. Look at the update in my post!!!
Update to whatever version MS wants you to.
    Disconnect from the internet.
Update the Audio device, I guess via Device Manager or by running the new driver's installation program.
    Apply the Enable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg file
    Reconnect to the internet.

And please mind the Warning, for future updates!!!

And Rhiannon... since the enable and disable goes to the restriction imposed, the description of the two reg files should have been:

Enable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg = Prevent installation of new driver for Audio device
Disable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg = Allow installation of new driver for Audio device

As long as you won't hold it against me, the next time you won't be able to manually update your driver (as I have already warned you, hahahaha)...everything is cool.

And I find it highly irresponsible for the rest of you to advocate to a newbie poster to go registry diving.
No Registry diving to do if you had looked ? you simply right click on the downloaded .reg file and merge it into your Registry which even a beginner can do.....it why i recommended doing it that way....

Haha... you got it! I am NOT one to be wanting to update my HDA driver every other day! And IF and when I do update it I'll just enable first. Is there any way to test what I just did? I followed my notes step-by-step.

First of all, go back to the original post and copy the updated warning into your notes!

    Yes you can test it.
Either try updating the driver by going into Windows Updates and pressing search for updates
Or get a newer version of the audio driver and try to apply it.
None of these should be able to update your driver, since its installation is restricted by the new Policy you applied!

And BTW there is no need to thank me. It was my pleasure!
After all, that's why we are here, to try to help each other, with the things we have learned (usually the hard way!!!)
