Why do apps save their settings in\documents instead of \appdata\local

    I turned on Windows Defender\protected folders, and some of the apps get an exception when running;
a popup from Defender asking me if I want to create an exception for these apps.
If I don't create the exception, the app's not usable

Is there some setting in Windows 10 causing this? Seems odd this would be happeningWhy do apps save their settings in\documents instead of \appdata\local-docs.jpg

The problem is that those applications are badly written rather than there being some Windows setting at fault. They ought to be using AppData or Program files / Program files (x86).
I've currently got four examples from modern applications and a further four from decade-old applications.

I am surprised that Audacity is non-compliant. Perhaps you once had a very old version of it on your computer.

It probably has to do with how the programmers wrote the program. Maybe also involved is how a program was installed on a computer with 2 or more users set up, whether installed only for current user or all users.

Yeah it's interesting, I looked a little closer, the Audacity folder was empty so may have been left over
from an older install. I have a portable 64 bit version that uses its own sub folders, and an installed 32 bit (3.13)
that doesn't seem to touch that folder.

The Accusonus folder was some settings for version 5 audio VST effects, this may be a few years old.

The TMPGenc version 7 Video Mastering Works trial, up to date version installed a few days ago. It created the folder
and three subfolders, but they're empty even though I've used the program. In fact appdata\roaming
appears to contain data for this program in \pegasys inc\TMPGEncVMW7\ which is current

The oeksound folder is empty, but I had the VST plugin installed a month or two back, recent version,
so not sure why I still get prompted, I guess at a minimum those programs wanted to create those folders
    at least.
Seems like it's something left over from Windows XP

Blame MS. MS changes rules every 2-3 years. Program files / Program files (x86) / Documents / Roaming / Appdata.

Good point, I just noticed the Accusonus folder has a namesake in c:\programdata\ and that one is 164 MB, full of
settings and other stuff - so this is the "Live" folder, the one in \documents is created, but not used.
    What a mess

Some programs I use store settings in appdata but sometimes some of those programs use a folder in documents as the default save location for files.

    Examples:
