attempting a macrium restore - it was not possible due to a missing/corrupt ntoskrnl.exe in system 32. (I have windows 10 pro 32 bit os in the computer concerned)
How do I replace/repair this. Any help would be most appreciated

Afraid this does not address the problem.
Let me give further information.
There is no problem in the pc starting up.
I was just checking that the macrium restore facility was working. (This I do occasionally) to ensure all is working as it should.
For the first time ever, it failed, and sited that the ntoskrnl.exe was corrupt or missing (From system 32).
My query was how do I replace/repair this file.
Hope this clarifies the situation.

Were you testing Macrium from the boot menu, or from a recovery usb? Either way, the answer is the same. The missing ntoskrnl.exe referred to is not the one for your installed Windows, it is almost certainly the one in the Macrium recovery boot.wim that is being booted.
Try forcing a rebuild of the WIM. To do this open the rescue media builder and press Ctrl, the Build button will now have a drop-down option to rebuild the WIM.
The boot.wim is created from the WinRE.wim and if that has never been updated you might get that problem. If the PC is starting up normally doesn't matter.
Beside that, I have no idea how you do this:

Have tried rebuilding the wim as suggested, but no go unfortunately. Same message re ntoskrnl.exe received.
As a point of interest, I also tried an earlier dvd rescue disk, and had the same result.
Should have mentioned before that the laptop is a 32 bit w10 pro - macrium is the free edition
At the moment will have to (on this particular laptop) rely on frequent system restore entries via windows.

If yes, delete it
You don't have to rebuild the wim as long as you don't update your Recovery WinRE-wim! Clear?
A chance relook on the Macrium forum, and I saw someone with simular problem. He found that a rescue dvd disk produced on a different pc enabled him to carry out a restore action. Having several old disks myself, I gave it a try, and YES it worked for me also. Strange, but a major step forward.
Still interested in further input from forum members.

It sounds like this PC's WinRE.wim that Macrium uses as the base for building its boot.wim may be corrupt.
If you have current install media, either as a USB or an ISO, then you can use 7-Zip File Manager to extract a fresh copy. See....
