    PLease: Quick/Easy/Free Text Editor

Believe it or not I've been hunting for two days. Tried heaps. had Gpt helping me even.

Not a code editor. A text editor.

Mainly I just want something that comes up as quickly as notepad ( or even quicker ) and the big thing it should have is simply BOLD at the very least and coloured text would be nice.

I will use it as a scratchpad. A notepad, is all. And I've found with the mass of grey text I produce it is imperative to have some way to distinguish some headings or whatever.

Notepad++ and various other 'goodies' I've been recommended don't do that.
Code editors, beaut as they are, don't do that.
I love the column editing feature of code editors but I can do without it if I get a handy scratch pad that I can section up in some very clear way like with BOLD and colours.

Anyone know Yahoo mail? Well when I click 'reply' with Yahoo mail I much enjoy using their little text editor for it offers me those things. I typically reply to things by interspersing my responses in red. Very easy for them to see. Print it all out or save it and I've got a good record of that whole transaction.

Bit of messing around to select colour with it. Have to get the palette and choose and keep repeating that action. But so be it, better than nothing.

So I am not asking for much. I strongly suspect what I am asking for is already here in win10 somewhere beneath my very nose. Will someone point it out to me, please, if so?

Thanks for that. Haven't tried it yet but I will. I take it that it loads up, pops up super quite like notepad or something.. not like MS Word or Libre ? Because I have them of course. I'm looking for something as quick and light as notepad.

Can't check it out right now. I'm on my linux mint box and it doesn't run on Linux. It'd be handy if something could be found that runs on both platforms....

You already have a solution - WordPad.
    "%ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"

By the way, you should have been asking for a word processor not a text editor.
You want to set bold & coloured text, that necessitates a word processor.
A text editor only manages what the text is.
That discrepancy in your terminology has probably been what has hampered your search for a solution.

Thanks for that. You're right. Might be all I need.

You'd call Yahoo mail's editor a word processor?

I'd like to coin a phrase, a name: 'text manager' perhaps.

There's probably an app out there amenable to added code perhaps like running a macro, you know? And we could write something that would add those two simple things: bold and colour.

It is funny how the software world advances. Even Word itself is clumsy on this if I remember right, last time I tried. I had to do some macro thing or something... which, of course I lost as I moved between machines....

It is certainly all you need for the capabilities you said you wanted.
If you had searched for simple word processor then you'd probably have found the answer straightaway.

I don't know. I've never seen it. Your description of it makes it sound like a word processor.

Don't. There is no need for one.

You will not find a text editor with any means of being transformed into a word processor however limited the word processing facilities you want. You might as well try to turn a fly into a banana.
And there's no point in reinventing the wheel anyway.

Your Word macro exists in the Word .docm file or the Word .dotm template file it was created in.
All mine are in my Normal.dotm file or in a separate more specialised template and I copy both of them to all my computers so they all have all my Word macros.

Well all of that looks to me like gratuitous near ad hominem. I just don't see the point of it. And the assertions it makes are debatable in any case. I don't come here for that kind of crap.

I ask straight honest questions and I expect answers to the point and helpful from people who want to do that or a silence.

And I think that is a reasonable expectation. It works in every other forum I use.

That's right. That's exactly what I thought. Gratuitous.
Whereas your contribution was of course completely necessary and informative, contributing immensely and bringing us all closer to enlightenment regarding availability of handy text managers.

Can't do anything other but thank you for that, can we?

Can't do any more though because I don't do ad hominem. Interact once and then forget is my practice.
