After Windows INSTALLED A NEW REALEASE [AUTO] My Apps started missing

Calculator, sticky notes... started to disappear. Have tried several methods on the internet but none works.
Calculator, sticky notes are no longer listed in "Apps", totally gone.
I miss them, have tried MICROSOFT STORE but no help.

As per the forum prompt (to save us asking) specify build number please. Which new release?

Those are default apps provided in Windows.

From the searchable tutorial list (bookmark):

I tried both cmds as you said, took ~ 5 minutes, seem to complete and then I typed in "calculator" and "sticky notes". they were NOT found.

    You asked for my release:
    as of 6/13/20
    1809 (OS Build 17763.1282)

I did not install this release as Microsoft in its infinite wisdom no longer allows me to STOP an update when I get a GOOD one that works. So, I don't know if "

    1809 (OS Build 17763.1282)

    is old, new, good, bad.......

On this issue, it first deleted "calculator", day or two later it deleted "sticky Notes" and dont know what is next.

I did not install this release as Microsoft in its infinite wisdom no longer allows me to STOP an update when I get a GOOD one that works.
With those old (obsolete) builds you need Pro for options to defer feature updates for up to 365 days, else use one of the frequently mentioned free 3rd party tools- like Sledgehammer, or the one in Option 7 of the tutorial on disabling automatic updates.

With build 1909, MS introduced significantly more control for Home users.

1903 is the last build before MS made controversial (messed up initially) changes to Windows search in file explorer.

You say you installed a new release, but I still can't tell if you mean you received a feature update to a new major build. Please clarify.

    Perform some basic checks please.
Disk: download install and run HD Tune v2.55 (free) e.g. from Softpedia- Health and Error scan tabs.
If ok, check your file system:
From an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
If ok, check your system files:
From an admin command prompt run
    SFC /SCANNOW

    Report any failure. Thanks.

    Thanks, will do

The reason I thought "it was UPDATING WINDOWS" is sometimes at boot, I would get a message "wait while Windows updates....."/

So, my OS is very old? Out of date?

    - - - Updated - - -

My PC says my LAST OS UPDATE WAS: 3/16/2019.
On this page, the only UPDATE offered is for my OFFICE I have installed.

I can not find ANY button that asks me to:
check if you are running the latest OS or
Do you want to update your OS to the current version.

Why is it so hard for Microsoft to offer these options?

YES I want the latest version but I can not find it on this laptop anywhere.

Yes, you say you are running build 1809. That's from 2018, month 9.
    Since then we've have 1903 (2019, March); 1909, 2004.
Of these 1903 and 1909 are the most stable, with the update to 1909 not being implemented in a completely new way.

See the News section here where there is a thread per update per build with download links.

I can not find ANY button that asks me to:
check if you are running the latest OS or
Do you want to update your OS to the current version.
This is known as Windows Update.

Can you see the button? Simply open Settings and type 'Update' into the search box.
Why is it so hard for Microsoft to offer these options?
    - untrue - a simple Google search might have helped. Like any tool, using Windows needs some familiarity.

YES I want the latest version but I can not find it on this laptop anywhere
    .
    a. The latest version is not necessarily the best. Often a new build is released with significant bugs, sometimes very embarrassing and widely reported. Better to wait until at least the first update after a major build has been released- and check the news - and reports here e.g. in the News section.

    b. The new version isn't on your laptop - it needs to be downloaded and installed, whether manually, or via Windows Update

    c. New builds are distributed to people worldwide over perhaps 2-3 months, with PCs deemed most compatible typically first. Some may not be offered this for some time, and some may be told their PC isn't quite ready.. a confusing message meaning the new build or drivers e.g. are not fully compatible with that PC and could cause problems.

Thanks, am on: OS 1909 version 18363.900
BUT: STICKY NOTES is listed on apps but is GREYED OUT.
CALCULATOR is nowhere to be found, not on app list, search finds nothing.

When I try to GET anything from MICROSOFT STORE, I get a popup:

This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default Apps Setting range

Where do you suggest I go from here?

Hi, from post #4 first perform some basic checks please. Don't skip these, as it's not worth building a house on sand.

Disk: download install and run HD Tune v2.55 (free) e.g. from Softpedia- Health and Error scan tabs.
If ok, check your file system:
From an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
If ok, check your system files: From an admin command prompt run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    Report any failure.

If all those pass, then (diagnostic check)
Create a new user for test purposes. Log in as that user, and see if the same problems exist.

If they don't, post back- the problem lies with your user profile.

If they do, Windows is damaged, and I suggest you perform an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data just like any upgrade.

For this you need a 1909 iso (or bootable disk as source) - if you have one already you can use that.

This tutorial includes a link to another tutorial telling you how to get one.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

    Short instructions:
Check you've at least 30Gb free on C:
    Rt click iso, click Mount.
Open new drive letter ing file explorer.
    Double click setup.exe to start.

dalchina Thanks but think it is time to "clear core, hit reset"...
I had one of the original PC's [IBM] running DOS 1.0. In addition to managing large IBM Data Centers, and working as a SUN UNIX Sys Admin, but I never got in a Microsoft Windows "mind set", and now retired from IBM.

I followed your instructions down to disengaging SECURE BOOT and then thought was never going to get my system to reboot again, but did.
Need a new approach. I have several PC's, laptops, desktops, win 7, win 10, pro, home.... My Lenovo LT has HOME but it came with NO BACKUP of Windows home OS.
Can you point me to a simple way to back up my copy of Windows 10 Home, or get a new copy so if I get too corrupted, lose my OS I can start over and rebuild my system? Maybe a fresh copy of Windows 10 on a USB? Just in case? Backing up my data is no problem but do not have a backup of my OS but do have my Lic keys.
And/or a recommended method of "backing up" with maybe an IMAGE"?
Between COVID-19 and Windows, I am going nuts.

    - - - Updated - - -

PS: I did..." If they do, Windows is damaged, and I suggest you perform an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data just like any upgrade."

Took the best part of a day, kept repeating itself, finally quit, turned off, BUT did not know what to do after that. BUT, think you nailed it. Maybe a "user profile" issue as it is squirrelly. .
For this you need a 1909 iso (or bootable disk as source) - if you have one already you can use that.

As I said, the vendor did not supply one when I purchased my machine.

I have explained all Win 10 builds are freely downloadable.

I have given you the tutorial.

    I said

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade
Look: it's here - I'll open that tutorial for you and find the exact reference: It says:

4 To Do a Repair Install of Windows 10 with an ISO file

    A) If you have not already, you will need to download a Windows 10 ISO file.
Then you click on that link and it takes you here:
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

    where you have these options:

    Contents

    • Option One: Download Latest Windows 10 Home or Pro ISO using Media Creation Tool
    • Option Two: Download Latest Windows 10 Education ISO using Media Creation Tool
    • Option Three: Directly Download Latest Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft
    • Option Four: Directly Download Latest or Recent Windows 10 Insider Preview ISO from Microsoft
    • Option Five: Download Older Windows 10 Home or Pro ISO from Microsoft via TechBench by WZT
    • Option Six: Download Older Windows 10 Home, Pro, or Education ISO from Microsoft via "Windows ISO Downloader" tool by HeiDoc.net
Notice Option 6 which I asked to be added recently: for older builds.
