As per the forum prompt (to save us asking) specify build number please. Which new release?

Those are default apps provided in Windows.

I did not install this release as Microsoft in its infinite wisdom no longer allows me to STOP an update when I get a GOOD one that works.

With those old (obsolete) builds you need Pro for options to defer feature updates for up to 365 days, else use one of the frequently mentioned free 3rd party tools- like Sledgehammer, or the one in Option 7 of the tutorial on disabling automatic updates.

With build 1909, MS introduced significantly more control for Home users.

1903 is the last build before MS made controversial (messed up initially) changes to Windows search in file explorer.

You say you installed a new release, but I still can't tell if you mean you received a feature update to a new major build. Please clarify.

Perform some basic checks please.
Disk: download install and run HD Tune v2.55 (free) e.g. from Softpedia- Health and Error scan tabs.
If ok, check your file system:
From an admin command prompt run
chkdsk c: /scan
If ok, check your system files:

SFC /SCANNOW

So, my OS is very old? Out of date?

Yes, you say you are running build 1809. That's from 2018, month 9.
Since then we've have 1903 (2019, March); 1909, 2004.
Of these 1903 and 1909 are the most stable, with the update to 1909 not being implemented in a completely new way.

I can not find ANY button that asks me to:
check if you are running the latest OS or
Do you want to update your OS to the current version.

This is known as Windows Update.



Can you see the button? Simply open Settings and type 'Update' into the search box.

Why is it so hard for Microsoft to offer these options?

- untrue - a simple Google search might have helped. Like any tool, using Windows needs some familiarity.

a. The latest version is not necessarily the best. Often a new build is released with significant bugs, sometimes very embarrassing and widely reported. Better to wait until at least the first update after a major build has been released- and check the news - and reports here e.g. in the News section.

b. The new version isn't on your laptop - it needs to be downloaded and installed, whether manually, or via Windows Update

c. New builds are distributed to people worldwide over perhaps 2-3 months, with PCs deemed most compatible typically first. Some may not be offered this for some time, and some may be told their PC isn't quite ready.. a confusing message meaning the new build or drivers e.g. are not fully compatible with that PC and could cause problems.

Hi, from post #4 first perform some basic checks please. Don't skip these, as it's not worth building a house on sand.

Report any failure.

If all those pass, then (diagnostic check)
Create a new user for test purposes. Log in as that user, and see if the same problems exist.

If they don't, post back- the problem lies with your user profile.

If they do, Windows is damaged, and I suggest you perform an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data just like any upgrade.

For this you need a 1909 iso (or bootable disk as source) - if you have one already you can use that.

Short instructions:
Check you've at least 30Gb free on C:
Rt click iso, click Mount.
Open new drive letter ing file explorer.
Double click setup.exe to start.

As I said, the vendor did not supply one when I purchased my machine.

I have explained all Win 10 builds are freely downloadable.
