    .iso extension missing from settings/choose default apps by file type

    This ties partly into my other issue of not being able to mount ISO files in windows explorer. I am getting no luck on fixing that separate issue, so maybe if i tackle it at a different angle, the other problem could be solved as well. Please do not move this issue to Virtualization.

    The Issue

    Basically, in my "Choose default apps by file type" settings window, the .iso extension is missing. I am running Windows 10 Home Version 1809
    .iso extension missing from settings/choose default apps by file type-screenshot.35.jpg
    In the past, it was there, and also in the past, I was able to mount .iso files by right clicking, and selecting "mount". The option to mount is still there;

    But gives me this error;

    .iso extension missing from settings/choose default apps by file type-screenshot.26.jpg

    (this is part of my secondary issue being taken care of in another thread (hopefully)) so please don't move this thread to virtualization.

    What I want:

    I want the .iso extension back in my list of extensions in my settings --> default apps--> choose default apps by file type window.

    Things I have tried;

    • 1) Going to Settings - Indexing Options
      2) Advanced button
      3) File Types tab
      4) Add New Extension to List box, type in extension, (without a period) in this case "iso"
      5) Click OK and Close
    • Right clicking any .iso file, and selecting "open with", then selecting "choose another app", and then selecting "Windows Explorer".
    • Right clicking any .iso file, selecting "Properties", then selecting the "Change" button under "opens with" and selecting "Windows Explorer".
    • Restoring the default Windows file extension through registry fix detailed here with OPTION TWO and selecting the .iso reg file, adding it to my registry, and restarting my pc.
    • I created a "fake" extension named .isotest. It successfully appeared in the settings menu(see picture above)
    • Ran "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" in elevated cmd prompt and then "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt. No issues were found.

    In the registry, it shows that iso files are opened with Windows.IsoFile. Looking under the reg key, I cannot tell if anything is incorrect. Below are the reg keys associated with Windows.IsoFile and the .iso key in Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\

    I'm not sure what else to do aside from formatting my pc which I really don't want to do for this issue. Help is greatly appreciated. Please read the whole post before suggesting things please.

    Thanks.

    The Mount ISO works correctly on mine. There is no entry for .ISO in "choose default apps by file type".

    I can also use CDBurnerXP and 7-Zip to open an ISO, no problem with those either.

    I suspect Right Click context menu problems, You have around 8 extra items in there, I have none.

    In the past I had a problem with an uninstaller stripping branches of the Registry out resulting in missing and non working Right Click menu entries in Explorer.

    Painstakingly I found out what was missing and put them back rather than do a re-install of Windows. I recall it was several branches.

    Context menu handlers are everywhere in the Registry and I don't have any of those extra applications you have so this can only be a first and last message on the subject.

    Just my 1.5 cents worth.....

    Apps like 7-Zip, WINRar, etc. may take the .ISO as there own default. Just right click and open with Explorer....same as Mount. If it's been posted, sorry in advance.

    By default iso doesn't exist. Inspecting the reg file from the tutorial confirms this. Installing a program that specifically handles iso files such as Imgburn, Poweriso, will create the necessary registry entries and .iso will be listed in Settings.

    Hey guys. Thanks for the feedback.

    As for the context menu, some of the context menu additions that you see have shortened my work load quite a bit, thats why they are there. I could remove a few of them since i no longer use them (mainly the sfv and yabber ones).

    I do hope my registry isn't stripped of branches relating to the problem here (or maybe there is no problem?). I made a "fake" extension just by creating a text file and renaming the extension to .isotest. That extension appeared in my default apps by file type settings menu. I thought, by that logic, shouldn't any extension appear in that menu? I mean, ISO is not so uncommon, and i'm sure there are many people who would have liked to use that settings menu to change the default app (in most cases its windows explorer) to something else.

    I am aware that installing other apps(7zip, winrar, etc) can give you options to associate those apps with certain file types and I made sure to uninstall those apps prior to trying to troubleshoot the issue.

    I am going to say and believe that you guys are correct ( the .iso extension isn't supposed to be in the default app by file extension settings menu) and close this case. I assumed that it was supposed to be there like many other extensions, especially after installing apps like 7zip/winrar.

    I appreciate everyone's help and feedback.

    Thanks!

    Hey, just wanted to say a quick thanks for this! For some reason .iso extension was missing from my registry, and it really messed up the icons for it (just got plain generic icon rather than the default one).
    This helped me fix the problem, appreciate it!
