How often do people reboot?

I shut down my desktop PC and power it off at the mains when not in use and shutdown laptops when not in use for a day or so since there is still a small battery drain in sleep mode. With exception of power components in PSUs, electronics don't 'wear out' unless subject to excessive running temperatures. I've found Windows 11 rock stable on all PCs.

Simple logic - less time pc is exposed to internet, less time it can get hacked.

    So shutdown daily reduces risk.

Is it needed - who cares, it only takes about 20-30 seconds to reboot.

(hello, first time poster, long-time computer user)

    Brief history

I've had a windows 7 laptop for the past 10 years (Fujitsu Lifebook since 2012) - basically no issues. productive/did (does) the job. I thought it was worth buying a new one because electronics wears out. (and the fan is noisy)

I bought a new Lenovo 11th gen i5 about 6 weeks ago, UEFI prevents Windows 7 being installed - I guess the powers that be don't want people doing that. (unfortunately - we have 4 computers running windows 7 here with no issues)

I installed Windows 10 on it (imo Windows 11 is....horrible, I could probably give reasons), and have been having no end of problems (system stability, user interface, basically anything). I could post a long rant with screenshots, but anyway.

Somewhere to start. Several applications (incl chrome, torrent s/w, ms paint) have been giving me out of memory errors every few minutes for the last couple of days (18 days uptime, errors started about 2 days ago). The question is - how often do people restart their systems? Windows 7 reliably constantly gives me several weeks of uptime (1-2 months without problems), so I'm used to a few weeks between reboots (I've run the memory diagnostic tool - all clear - it's a new laptop)

Let me know if there's any info not in my profile that should be there..

    many thx.
I reboot my laptop once a day! The laptop is unpowered at night. Safety reasons!

I learnt windows 10 has something called "modern standby"
It is not Windows 10 that "has" it.
It is your computer hardware & Bios.
You can find out if your computer has it by running this command [in either a cmd or a PS window].
    Code:
    PowerCfg -a
And you can post your results if you want comments.

I'm not here to argue that :- ) but I would say there are other things that can go wrong as well as power components. But yes power components are "higher risk". as Bill Gates probably said "you can never have too many spare components". (especially on a laptop that's over 10 years old..). but electronics "don't go wrong" isn't good engineering practice..

wrt rebooting, waiting 20-30 seconds everytime I wanted to use the computer wouldn't be compatible with how I use it. I'd suggest the risk of hacking is overstated but you never know.. I've certainly never been hacked - or never been aware of being hacked - with the computer idle online. I've been hacked from downloading an infected file which caused me to "up" the security of my general usage practice. not letting web browsers store my paypal password was probably the most important thing I've done in terms of security

I can file modern standby under "things I didn't know I needed to ask before buying a new laptop" (as well as "does this support legacy BIOS"). It's been at least 10 years since I've been in the market for a new laptop.

    Current powercfg results

modern standby is disabled at the moment, I'd have to restart to enable it. I have tabs open at the moment so restarting would interrupt things (this is the reason I want days or weeks worth of uptime ;-)

    - thanks.

That's a very unusual set of PowerCfg -a results.
You don't have any power states other than On.

Why have you used the words "current" & "at the moment"?
What makes you expect to be able to enable S0 Modern standby?

And the fan and / or HDD bearing will fail soon.

Denis - Because I disabled modern standby when I learnt what it did (ie, the computer still has network connectivity when put into modern standby, and can still download updates which isn't really standby). So modern standby is disabled at the moment, because I can re enable it.

The HDD bearing won't fail, it's an SSD. The fan bearing? It's a new system. really? The HDD and fan bearing will fail because it doesn't go into standby? (that sort of contradicts one of the other posts in the thread which says electronics doesn't go wrong) If anything, going into standby regularly would cause an HDD to fail quicker because it's spinning up all the time. I've never experienced a fan or HDD bearing failing, that's an unusual thing to say? But back to the question, the only moving part is the fan, and it's a new system (and the fan is stationary at idle most of the time - in fact that is probably the best thing about this laptop - it's quiet) so I would hope it would last a while..

Anyway, the important part is that the BIOS in this laptop doesn't support S3. Which isn't great, but there you go.

Windows reboots every 2 weeks, after updates. So the real question is, do you reboot more often?

If I need to get into the habit of rebooting every 2 weeks, I can probably get into the habit of rebooting every 2 weeks. It doesn't seem to be a step forward in operating-system'ness (W7 let me continue issue-free until it started to chug after 4-5 weeks. and that slow down wasn't W7 itself, it was browser related. Excel, Word etc still responded fine). But there you go. First world problems.
