How slow is for a HDD?

    Hi,
I am running a HDD in the DVD-caddy of my Thinkpad (T440P). The MB/s seems really low.

Is this because I have the drive in a DVD-caddy? Would it be faster in the main drive bay?

I'll tell you a relevant story, and then talk about possible factors.

My computer has 2 sata ports, both 6gbps, my SSD was on the MAIN sata port (thick shielded cables where an mechanical hdd was placed). Removed the DVD and placed instead an hdd caddy (brand new) with a 7200RPM hdd. After months and for whatever reasons decided to make some changes and swap this. My SSD is now on the dvd caddy and guess what? it's FASTER despite the thin cables, and guess what? (again), I made the new hdd caddy replacing the previous one. Yes I like to recycle and often make this caddys out of broken DVDs.

You might want to explore using a diff caddy, or changing sata ports, like I did.

    Now let's talk about factors:
    1. Speed can be impacted by type of disk (mechanical vs ssd) I don't see you explaining if your hdd is mechanical or ssd.
    2. The quality of the cables might matter
    3. Check the ports specs, some computers come with SATA III for the main hard drive, but SATA I or II for the DVD (meaning limited speed)
    4. Check the health of your hdd

    @Massarelda

Get Crystal Disk Mark, here... Download - Crystal Dew World [en]
Download the ZIP (portable) version. Run Crystal Disk Mark on the hdd in question and post a screenshot of the result.

Here's one of my WD Black hard drives... 7200rpm, 256MB cache...
This is a fast hard drive on a SATA III 6GB/s, SATA port.

    Quickie screenshot directions.

    1. Use the PrtSc key to take a screenshot.
    2. Open an image editor like "Paint", and click Paste > Paste, or Edit > Paste.
    3. Click on Select > Rectangular Select and drag a box around what you want to show.
    4. Click on Crop.
    5. Click on File > Save as > PNG picture and save it to somewhere like your desktop.
    6. Now, in your Ten Forums post, click the mouse where you want the pic, and then click on the Insert Image icon.

    7. Then click on.. From Computer > Browse (to where you saved the screenshot) > Upload File(s).

    8. You will then see something like this. That's your "posted" image.

    Hi

Here's the result of my Seagate 500-GB HDD drive. Is this good or bad?

    Believe me. It is good.
For a 2.5" 5400 RPM drive it is normal. Changing to the main SATA port won't significant change the speed.
I suppose you have a SSD for windows and programs and use the HDD for data only.

The HDD is the only drive in my Thinkpad. It is slow to load Windows, but that is okay with me. Once it boots Window, the HDD performance is acceptable to me.

That was, until this week. This week I noticed apps were slower to load. The Photos app is alot slower: like it take almost 10-seconds to start up the first time. Before, it would take like only 2 seconds.

My Thinkpad got alot of Windows Updates this week. Maybe WU screwed something up.

That is a standard Laptop type HDD and your result is typical, nothing is wrong.

I have a Toshiba 1 TB laptop drive and it is virtually the same result.

You could get something like this instead... it's twice as big and over 5x faster.

    Samsung 870 EVO 1TB

Max Sequential Read Up to 560 MBps
Max Sequential Write Up to 530 MBps

I am upgrading RAM first. Samsung 16-GB DDR3L RAM is on the way.

Then, from dual-core to quad-core CPU.
    Then, from HDD to SSD.
