Sluggish OS

I've made the jump to windows 10 at the beginning of 2023
I've experienced down feeling since then, the worst of them is OS lag.

I've come from 7 , still have it on the same disk with the same installed applications I have in 10.

My system is X58A-UD3R gigabyte motherboard, I7 950 with 32Go DDR3 Ram, windows 10 enterprise 22H2. All Updates, bios, system, applications.

The 1st windows 10 boot is ok.
The following days, amongst use and hibernation sequences, my os becomes sluggish to the point that opening a save dialog in my graphic application takes nearly 3 seconds or opening a new explorer window takes also near 3 seconds to display all of it's content.
As I've lost 90% of my eyesight during covid, it's easier for me to use dark mode, hence the jump to windows 10, on top of it I use windowblinds, in both OS.

Trying to circumvent the issue I've look in various OS places and I've noticed tons of svchost instances in task manger, like 80 at this post time. I didn't have the same count in the other OS, being also an enterprise edition.

Do some of you guys experience this issue ?

Welcome to tenforums.

There are a lot of potential issues there- or it could be fairly simple. Some basic checks first.

I've no idea how many or what sort of disks you have- could you complete your specs? (Tutorial available, click 'My computers' under my post for comparison).

Disk(s).
You have older hardware so ..
a. Start by getting a copy of Crystal Diskinfo (free).
Use that to check each of your disks - instant result on its GUI.
Advise if any are not reported as 'Good'.

b. If ok, then from an admin command prompt run
chkdsk c: /scan
- instant result on the GUI- look at the end- check it reports ok. Advise if not.

c. How much free space do you have on C: ?

d. Log in normally, and about 4 minutes after that capture a screenshot of your task manager showing resource usage.
Organise columns of interest high to low by licking on the appropriate column header.

e. One bug some experience when opening folders with many multimedia files with file explorer is slow population of the file list.
If you experience this, as an experiment, try setting the folder to 'General items'.

This is normal in Win 10 and was a design change long ago. Previously the instances were effectively hidden. Nothing to worry about.

This sounds ike you have both Win 7 and 10 on the same disk. Are you dual-booting?
How did you install Win 10 - a clean install or as an upgrade from Win 7?

My experience of '10-
This t440s laptop bought 2nd hand ex-business, clean installed when bought about 5-6 years ago, never clean installed since, many progs installed- no issues. As fast as it ever was.

Similarly my other older laptop.

My bad I forgot that info.

I use legacy HDDs, monitored by Hard Disk Sentinel. I've check with crystal info, both software report good conditions.

Yes I dual boot and windows 10 was a clean install.
I have 3 HDDs, 2 1To western digital, one for 7, one for 10 and a 3To seagate for data. The 2 western are same models and Win10 C:\ has 760 Go left.
CHKDSK didn't find anything.

Windowblinds seems to have bad reputation so I have to try using 10 only in dark mode despite many UI parts still in black text on white background blinding me, to see if the issue shows as well, issue that oddly I don't have under 7.

I use some Stardock products- not WindowBlinds- but I believe some members do. I've not heard of it having a bad reputation as such, but dark mode seems to be inconsistent sometimes from what some have said.

Disliking the light backgrounds myself, but staying with light mode I have

- without using any system file hacks or 3rd party themes

I agree with dalchina but I also suggest regularly cleaning the disk to remove temporary files.
