I just don't like seeing multiple GB of space disappearing at one time for no apparent reason. If it keeps going, that's not good.

    My questions:
    (1) In the Windows Disk Cleanup panel, the "Windows upgrade log files" entry went from 231 MB (approx. where it's been for a long time) to 32 KB. Is this good or bad?
    (2) Looking at the Virtual Memory panel, the Recommended paging file size is 1893. Why did Windows not use that number, and why are we not using that number?
The space only disappears if the drive is dying and good space is used by data from a blocked bad clusters. In your case the free space wasn't / isn't disappearing. The free space is used by virtual memory (huge) or by temp files, browser cache etc.
Virtual memory is only used when physical (RAM) is all in use and you load another application that requires RAM. In this case, Windows move some amount of data from memory and save on the disk (much slower than RAM) freeing RAM for the application you want to load.
8G is a lot of memory and probably you rarely use more than half, but if you load many programs or applications at same time you may need more RAM and you make use of virtual memory as I explained above.
If you let Windows manage the size of the virtual memory, the virtual memory size will vary as needed and you will see the free space decreasing and increasing.
To avoid the the virtual memory size variation and as consequence the free drive space, I suggested you to set virtual memory to twice the size of the physical memory, that should be more than enough for normal use. Now you should only see free space decreasing as consequence of temp files, browser cache etc. Once you run Disk cleanup (to clean Windows) and CCleaner (to clean browser cache) the free space should return to normal.
If you set to a fixed value as the minimal you may experience freezing and or stability when windows needs more RAM.

Don't know what Reliability History is.
How to find if you don't use Windows search (or whatever it was that Dalchina used):

I may have missed somethng in the above, but Wiztree allows you to create a snapshot of the current scan. Make one a day for a few days and see what changes. Martin

Thanks, mngerhold. I'd never heard the term before; didn't know it was part of Windows. Now I know.

oh, no its not, see here. You have to save the current scan results as a .CSV (File>Export), then when you have a before and after scan saved, open multiple instances of Wiztree to compare on screen.

mngerhold, I think there's a little confusion going on here. What I meant was that I hadn't heard of Reliability History and didn't know it was something in Windows. Also, I hadn't heard of CSV file, so I searched on that and more-or-less understand that now. Thanks for your comments.
