zbook, I appreciate your (and everybody else's) trying to help, but this "run this" business is getting out of hand. I've run stuff up one side and down the other, and NONE of it has shown anything wrong. I'd have to take days off work just to keep downloading/running these things.

And what does BSOD have to do with anything? I'm not getting those. The next 2 things you don't tell me what they are; I'm supposed to download and run these things blindly. Also, I don't use or know anything about One Drive, Drop Box, or Google Drive. I don't know who runs Drop Box, but I stay as far away from M$ and Google as I can.

I'd be better off if somebody would just give me some answers about the pagefile.sys issue dealt with several posts above.

Again, I appreciate your help, but, honestly, I've run out of will to "run this," especially since there's no reason to believe it's going to lead to anything.

    Thanks.

It is possible the problem is the result of malware.
The resources are being used surreptitiously and Reflect has been used more than once.
I first installed Macrium into Win 7 and in the years following have only used it once in anger.Your " a number of times " is concerning.
The presence or not,of malware ought to be positively addressed

V2 is a log collector >allows scanning of msinfo32, dxdiag, event viewer, etc.

tuneup plus runs in the background scannow, restorehealth, chkdsk, etc.

chkdsk script collects all chkdsk reports from the event viewer

The scripts run in the background.

Batch files for use in BSOD debugging

joeandmarg0, I usually know what the problem is when I'm restoring a system image. Three times it was ransomware, and that was several years ago when I was using M$'s system image process, not Macrium. All the other times have been other things, plus I use 2 security products, with scans run fairly often, in addition to the real-time operation of the products. So, I'm discounting that theory.

zbook, I've done dism, scannow, chkdsk, and Crystal Disk Info. Let's let it go at that. If I did everything you people want me to do, I'd never be able to go to bed or to work. Thanks.

zbook, concerning the first link, I've already dealt with Storage Sense in an early post, and the other items don't apply to me, aside from the fact that they have nothing to do with why I'm losing free space.

Concerning your second link, you first raised the page file issue in post #25. It's also mentioned in posts 26, 28, 29, and 31. If you could review those posts and respond, that would be a great help.

    Thanks again.

There are multiple forum members that may be able to answer questions.

Files are needed for scanning to see if there were any significant problems reported by Windows.

IMO OP just needs to determine what folders are increasing in size (i.e. which exactly) before testing for errors using the myriad of utilities so far suggested.

Determine the scope of the symptoms... 'cos "Losing disk space GBs" means nothing until OP knows exactly where.

For example, when I've run into a similar 'disappearing free space' problem I've used a PowerShell module to dump a text file of folder sizes to my desktop. Then, when it's happened again, I've run the module again to see what folders have increased in size.

Once I know where, then I've used ProcessMonitor to determine which process(es) is/are responsible for those particular FileWrites.

There must be no end of 'FolderSize' monitors out there. IMO that's the starting point.

    Hope this helps...

RickC, I'm not a programmer and can't do a lot of 'command line' type stuff; it has to be pretty simple. After a little looking I've found FolderSizes by Key Metric Software. I will contact them and see if their product is appropriate for what I need. Thanks for responding.

It seems that your computer is working as it should and that you're giving too much importance to the drive space fluctuation.
You have a Virtual memory that is going up and down in many GBs. I have set my virtual memory to a 16384 MB (fixed value=min=Max) + set
I suggest you do the same: set the virtual memory to a 16384 MB (min=Max) + set, do a disk cleanup (using CCleaner if you use a browser other than Edge) and then follow up the free space.

As already suggested, install SSD. You have no idea what a SSD can do on an old computer (It can be a small SSD for Windows and programs if you use the HDD for data only). It will boot in seconds and open programs at a blink of an eye.
