SIW2, did it take 10 years to get to the size it is? As I said in the OP, free space has been going down for a while, but particularly recently.

How would I know if it's "paging a lot?"

If I reduce the allocated amount, would a possible effect be slower response? If so, I guess I could just increase the size to what it is now. My previous (first) computer had 2 GB of RAM, and I didn't really notice any problem.

I guess I'm gonna consider the SSD idea a separate issue at this point. Right now I wanna see what the best state of affairs is I can achieve with my current situation.

I know what my screenprint says about 'hibernation,' but I don't completely understand it. I don't know that I turned it on. If I turn it off, what happens/what do I lose? Also, where/how do I turn it off?
When Hibernation is enabled and you shut down your computer what your computer was doing is saved into the file C:\hiberfil.sys file. Note this file is normally hidden. When you power back up what your computer was doing is restored. For example, if you were running Edge with 10 tabs open and shut down, after the computer is restarted Edge will restart with the same tabs open.

If you don't care to restore any programs after you restart your computer then turn Hibernation off.

    Open Command Prompt as administrator

    To turn off hibernation:

Type powercfg.exe /hibernate off, and then press Enter.

    To turn on hibernation:

Type powercfg.exe /hibernate on, and then press Enter.

Thanks, MisterEd, we've gotten past that point. If you wanna start at the bottom and read up a few posts, I'll listen to anything else you wanna weigh in on. Thanks again.

With System files of 24.8GB and 32.3GB respectively it looks like you could both do with cleaning up Windows Updates.

I do so routinely once a month.

It's the Component Store that's using up all that extra space.

Bree, not sure I see your point. Can't check right this second (time for supper), but I'm pretty sure I've cleaned since my last W10 update. In any event, that wouldn't explain the 10s of GBs I've lost in the recent past.

Update: Missed your comment about the Component Store. Will look into that later.

Megahertz, forgot to mention it's HDD. What is SMART status; do I need to do this?
    Thanks.
As you have a HDD it is very important to check it's health.
Modern drives has a built in diagnostic called SMART - Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology.
If you have a drive hardware failure, SMART will probably report.

Megahertz, here it is (see below).

Can anybody answer my questions in post #31? [Edit: Also post #26 and the first paragraph of post #28.]

Bree, I've taken a quick look at Component Store. That may be more than I'm willing or have the time to take on; that's a bit much. Why do you think it's Component Store?

    zbook, I don't have SSD.

Incredible list of cleaning options. Some I already do; some just don't apply to me. Also, the problem isn't that I don't clean. We're still trying to figure out what that problem is exactly.

Any chance you could look at my questions in posts 26, 28, and 31? Thanks.
