Re-Booting After Power Glitch. What To Try Next ? (W10)

    Hello,

    Using a backup pc.

Had a momentary power glitch yesterday, about a second or two.

My W10 pc of course stopped.

On trying to reboot it, it hangs up, each time, with a blue screen,
and a message: Getting Windows Ready. Don't turn Off your Computer"

And it stays that way indefinitely.

What should I trey or do next, please ?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Just wait it out for a while and see what it does it can take a while to do anything and might seem like its stuck if its longer than about 20 minutes with no change then go from there.

    Hi,

    It's definitely "stuck".

I've bite the bullet, as the saying goes, and managed
to bring up a menu (ESC and F11 on restarting) that allows for "Resetting this PC".

Has gone to 2 % and seems to be stuck there.
I do realize that it is probably slow, but been quite a while at this 2 % mark.

    Is this "normal" ?

    Thanks again,
    Bob

    Did you began a Reset?
It can take many hours, don't cancel.

I would have done a disk check and a boot repair.
Do you have a drive image backup?

    Hi,

    I think I have.

Sorry for the dumb question(s), but am in my 80's now,
and I seem to miss many of the nuances these days.

As I mentioned, it continually hangs up with a msg: "Getting Windows Ready. Don't Turn Off Your Computer"

I think I have what you are referring to on a USB Stick.

How do I tell the pc, upon starting, to go to the USB stick for what is required ?

    Thanks for help; truly appreciated,
    Bob

there is usually a key press at post ( just after the beep but tricky to time ).

varies depending on your motherboard on gigabyte motherboard it is F12.

start the machine and keep tapping whatever the key is for your mobo.

a boot menu should pop up from which you select the usb stick

Hi, sorry to hear of your problem. Are we talking about a desktop, laptop, tablet or what?

Could you please tell us make and model, type of disk and number of disks inside.
If we know the make of your PC etc, it becomes possible to find out how to get it to boot from an external drive. This varies from make to make.

This tutorial (from the searchable Tutorial section) includes a list covering different makes.
Boot from USB Drive on Windows 10 PC

All we know from your specs is 'W7'. Are you in fact running Win 10? - your title says so.

What I would do first is to check all the disks in your PC.
    There are two ways.

    a. Create a live boot disk (Google, e.g. Hiren's, Bob Omb's ...), ideally one with Crystal Diskinfo (free) on it already - some have this - boot your PC from that and run that program.

    b. Extract the disks from the PC and connect them as USB disks to another PC, and then check them.

If the disks have not been damaged, then repair options are very limited if Windows does not boot.

I hope you've taken the oh so often give advice to create 3rd party disk images of your whole O/S to external storage e.g. a USB disk.

I also hope it wasn't updating Windows at the time- please confirm.

If power outages/lightning strikes are common - consider using a surge protector and a UPS (uninterruptible power supply).

I think I have what you are referring to on a USB Stick.
I think that what you have on the USB stick is a win 10 installation files.
Let's use it to do a check disk

When the computer starts, pres the F? key to launch the boot menu. SIW2 gave you some F keys to use depending on computer brand.
Select the USB stick is win 10 installation files. It will boot to the installation wizard.
At the Windows Setup screen, press Shift+F10 simultaneously to open a command line prompt.
    type:
    diskpart
list volume (take note of the windows volume letter. (it may not be C:)
    exit
chkdsk X: /f (replace X with the drive letter fond above)

Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc
