How To Create A Reminder or Popup on Shutdown

Is there a simple way to create a popup or reminder message on the computer screen when the PC is shutdown? I did a bit of searching and the task scheduler offers some options, but I could not find "shutdown" as one of the triggers. Or is there a simple windows app that can do this?

    Your advice would be appreciated.

    Kind regards
    Chris

Hi, there are plenty of pointers here... sure, it refers to Win 7, but I'd guess little has changed:

    Chris,

Shutdown happens very quickly so there is not much time to run anything.

What "reminder" do you want to display? It's only going to be on screen for a few moments.

    All the best,

Thank you both for your help.

Dalchina, I will look at the article and check through the points.

Denis, it could be any reminder or pop up note, or an image with text, like remember to turn off the AC's etc.

Task scheduler has a trigger, "on disconnect from user session". Is that the same as shutting down?

    Kind regards

event id 1074 is said to be the reliable option.

Description of "on disconnect from user session":
On Connection To AND Disconnect From User Session Triggers - Windows 7 Tutorial

But as Try3 pointed out, you may need to somehow pause the shutdown in order to see your message.

Better to use a script or program that
    a. Presents the message
    b. When the message has been acknowledged, start the shutdown.

People have sought to reinstate a shutdown sound.. sometimes a bit plays- sometimes not.

    Chris,

No but it is a stepping stone & might be appropriate for your case, I can comment further once I understand what you want.

I still don't understand what you are trying to achieve. A message onscreen for a second or so is not really going to achieve anything as far as I can tell.

Thank you Denis. Ideally, the message or a bitmap image with large text could be displayed for 5 seconds.

Ideally what I would like is a senario like this:

    A user clicks shutdown
Immediately large text with very large text displayed for 5 seconds on the screen with a written reminder.
eg "Please remember to turn of the AC's or whatever.

I think this would work better using a bitmap image with a bright coloured background to highlight the text. Text in a small window could easily be missed.

    Kind regards

    Chris,

There are a large number of events that take place in quick succession during a shutdown.
Choosing On disconnect from user session is as good a place to start as you are likely to find without complicating matters by setting up an Event viewer, Custom view to detect another event & trigger Task scheduler form there.
    - I don't know if it will work for you. These triggers are not well explained [Triggers - MSDocs] and I don't know if the trigger is just before or just after the logoff.
    - You will be tempted to set the task to run whether the user is logged in or not, to cover all bases, but the problem with that is that using that settings precludes running anything that appears onscreen [because only a logged in user can see a screen].
I can help you search for a suitable event to use as the trigger but it will involve using both Event viewer and a third-party equivalent called NirSoft FullEventLogView
    - Event viewer lets you discover the time of the shutdown - Import Event viewer, Custom views - Start-Shutdown, Power state transitions - my post #2 - TenForums
    - FullEventLogView lets you look chronologically before & after that shutdown time to see the other events that take place just before & just after it in the hope that using one of them as your trigger will give better results.

To display what you want may or may not be possible. Only experimentation will tell.
    - Create the picture you want,
    - Create a task [just a simple task for now for use in testing] to open that file,
    - Right click on the task & select Run,
If it does what you want then it is a good baseline for working on the real trigger.

This is all a lot of work for something that will be less noticeable than a yellow stickie on the wall behind the desk.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Thank you Dalchina and Dennis. I appreciate all of your replies very much.

Dalchina, thank you for the two links and suggestions. I will need some time to study and test them and see which points can help.

Denis, thank you for all the suggestions. I will also need to study them carefully and work through them.

It seems there is not a simple Windows app that can do this.

    Kind regards
