You know, since I disconnected the mapped drives on my wife's computer, there are promising signs that the slowdown has ended. If that is correct, could the router be to blame? I am asking, because I have tried to link smart plugs to the router, and it accepts one but no more, in spite of a spec that says there should be no problems with additional devices linked to it. I have the Netgear R6400 router.

Anything relating to access to a range of other drives might be a potential cause of problems...

It is, as I suggested, a process of elimination. If your PC is continuously networked, then one natural approach would be to isolate the PC.

    * Returning to your HD Sentinel screenshot, I realise many, many drives are shown... and for many it's impossible to see their condition from that. Therefore I'd ask you to run that again and check each one yourself.

The problem seems to be solved. As I mentioned, I unmapped my wife's drives (part of C, all of D = data), and a bit later, I remapped the D drive. Sevral days later, all is well. I am a happy camper!

Thanks for your input, which encouraged me to try various things.
