    Windows Random Freezing


    Windows 10 Pro version 20H2
    Build Number 19042.804
    About a month ago my laptop started to hang or freeze randomly. It's totally random, sometimes it happens when doing heavy tasks like video editing or gaming and sometimes it happens when watching movies or when I'm just hovering mouse for no reason. I can move my cursor but the whole background is frozen and sometimes I can't even move the cursor. The freeze time totally random, sometimes it lasts about 5-10 sec.

    I tried various solutions offered from forums and Youtube. Like Disk checks, scan for malware and virus, tweaking power options. But I did a test on my HDD using Crystal Disk Info and it shows 'Caution' with one bad sector something like that.
    So I can't figure out the cause for this, all drivers are up to date, no windows updates. Please let me know if you need any more files like logs or reports.

    Computer freezes on normal tasks

    Do you experience freezes
    - in Safe Mode?
    - after a clean boot?

    But I did a test on my HDD using Crystal Disk Info
    Please download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (SSDs too) - portable version available- post a screenshot of its report right on its GUI.

    Unfortunately there are no logs which will help here- could be hardware or software-related.
    Have you checked your RAM?
    Run stress tests?

    - in Safe Mode?     No I didn't test this in safe mode yet
    - after a clean boot? yes I did clean boot several times but no luck

    I did some stress tests and I will upload them alongside with results of the HDD test on Hard disk sentinel.

    Hard disk sentinel indicates your disk has failed.

    If you have been using disk imaging regularly and routinely as is so very very often recommended here, you already have a full backup and can restore your O/S to a new disk.
    E.g. Macrium Reflect (free).

    Note that the very act of disk imaging detects early disk failures. It is now too late to create a normal disk image.

    If you don't have a clone or a recent disk image already, you will need to perform a clean install.

    Consider attempting to rescue any critcal data not already backed up.

    For the future:
    You can also set Crystal Diskinfo to monitor and report against thresholds giving you early warning.

    So what does it mean by 'failed'?
    Sorry I don't actually know how this program works
    Does it mean is there a hardware issue ( because it shows 9% as the health of my disk) or is it a problem in the disk image? If it is an issue in the disk image I have to clean install the OS and start from scratch? Ok, that's not a problem cause I already planning to install an SSD to boost up the performance.
    And please can you tell me how do I prevent these kind of issues in the future and what kind of things causes them?

    Hi, it's not so much a question of how the program works, but understanding what a hard disk is, and it's possible failure modes.

    That's the report. HDS tries to estimate potential life- that's certainly an aspect proprietary to HDS.

    Hard disks consist of disks with magnetic surfaces that spin very fast. The surfaces can fail, and there is a certain built in redundancy that is managed by the disk's own firmware.

    But they will fail over time, usually progressively.

    Programs such as this use the SMART parameters from the disk. Crystal Diskinfo shows this closer to its raw format.

    Data isn't stored in 1's and 0's, rather in statistical estimates of lots of magnetic dipoles. Sometimes the surfaces can be damaged physically.
