The controller mode has to be set and saved in the BIOS setup. The problem is that Windows will try to load the ATA driver and probably fail to start. I solved this by configuring Windows to start in safe mode, then restarted, made and saved the change in the BIOS, then let Windows start once in Safe mode. There are also other ways to do it.

Good point. His SATA mode should already be set to AHCI mode by default, but it is worth checking to make sure.

You should seriously consider the In-place upgrade I mentioned.
It will leave all your programs and data intact, but will give Windows and your drivers a brand new refresh, so to speak.

It will take you about 2 hours to do.
As I said before, this will pretty much eliminate any Windows/drivers issues you may have.

This is worth doing especially if you "upgraded" from Windows 7, rather than doing a clean install.
When you do an upgrade from a previous operating system, it bring along a ton of "crud", that doesn't help you or your computer.

I just went from Win 7 to Win 10 in May of this year. I did a clean install instead of an upgrade.
About 1.5 months ago I did an In-place upgrade from 1909 to 2004. it worked fine, and I have no issues at this time.

We've recommended this option to dozens of people on here. No problems yet.

Hi gal1234, Welcome to Ten Forums.
I've been following your thread, have re-read it a couple of times and have a few questions.

    1) Is this excessive disk usage very intermittent whereby you experience periods that everything seems to be operating correctly?

    2) Approximately what is the period of time it functions properly?

    3) Does this excessive disk usage appear irrelevant to when you're using the PC versus it sitting idle?

    4) I read that this was a Win7 upgraded to Win10 2004. Do you recall if your PC has had this issue since the Win10 upgrade?

Given that this issue may be driver related, why not try a clean boot as a quick and easy test?

I have already tried upgrading windows 10 and the problem still persisted sadly.

The disk spiking to 100% is only intermitent but the laggy and slow pc is always present. The spikes are mostly when i play bf4 but sometimes it can be even when just browsing the internet. Yes i never had this isssue on windows 7 only on windows 10 did it start.

The biggest problem is the slowness and lag actually and i think it effects everything from games to doing regural stuff.

I would suggest downloading and running Sysinternals Process Explorer...

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...ocess-explorer

In the toolbar, click on Options > VirusTotal.com > Check VirusTotal.com

Each process will be checked for malware, and the results displayed in a separate column.

Once you have that set up, click View on the toolbar and select System Information.

In the Summary tab, you'll see live graphs.

Hover your mouse over the Disk graph to see activity.

There are also live graphs at the top of the Process Explorer window..

You can add additional columns to the list of processes by right-clicking on any column header.

I would suggest adding Disk Reads and Disk Writes from the Process Disk tab.

If your PC worked well before upgrading to 2004, and the problem is driver-related, then what you actually need is the driver you were using.. unless you are lucky, trying to update will probably not help.

Further, if it is driver-related, nor will an in-place upgrade repair install help.

To prove a point, you could grab a spare disk, and install, say, 1903 on that, and see if that suffers the same problem or not. Clearly that's not diagnostic, more indicative.

You can clearly demonstrate the transfer rate by copying a large file back to the same disk and observing the task manager Performance tab.
