    Normal temps for Dell laptop

I received a fan failure warning from Support Assist yesterday- I have core temp installed and am watching the temps. When doing normal browsing or data entry temps run about 44 on core 1-3. The only time it gets really hot is playing angry birds2. I am going to replace the fan - Is 44 ok for a temp until I can get fan replaced? laptop 2 yrs old this nov! Dell 5570. thank you! 44 would be totally harmless.

Raise your eyebrows a bit at 70.

I thought 44 would be ok. It hits 85 when playing the game. I have ordered a fan and will replace but am wondering if there are any software components on this system that I can adjust that will help. I really would rather not replace the fan - but will if no other options available. I updated the bios a couple of days ago which seemed to help a bit but that game just really heats it up. Thanks so much.

Laptops are notorious for running hotter than you'd like when gaming.

Not a whole lot other than the obvious you could do---keep vents clean, make sure whatever fans you have are running. There might be BIOS settings of some type that would give you some control over fan speed--but fans may be running wide open when you are at 85. There are cooling pads if you want to pay.

I'd probably live with it and accept it as a trade-off I willingly made when I chose laptop over desktop. You get portability at a cost---higher temps.

Sounds "normal" when playing games, which can be "worst case".
I have an Inspiron 15 Gaming 5577 model and it can get hot when gaming. The 5577 has larger air vents to allow more heat escape than a regular laptop. I use mine in my recording studio not gaming but I've run some of the gaming benchmark programs just to see and it hit 75 on one. I've done field testing of new XPS laptops, for Dell, and running benchmark programs causes temps to jump up.

If you got the fan failure notice only once and not on the POST (Power On Self Test)it may not really be a fan failure. Run the Dell diagnostics accessable by F12 at power on.

I did only get it once. I will try your suggestions -- thanks!! Oh How do you do that POST thing?

The POST is automatic. When you power it on the first thing it does is run the POST.

    ok! go Nashville!!
Ran the hardware scan at f12 - no issues detected. If there are no issues, why is it running hot? My concern is if I do run the game at 85- it will be bad for the system, yes? If I do replace the fan, it may still overheat since the diagnostic didn't show any problems. What a PIA!
    Thanks again.

"No issues detected" means "within limits". Maybe hot, but within limits established by hardware manufacturers.

At some temp point, the machine would likely throttle back---that could be as high as 100 degrees.

Ignore it or worry extensively. Your choice.

It's anyone's guess whether your laptop will fail sooner than if it never got above 70 degrees. Too much randomness to say that.
