    Windows 10 extremely long boot time, need help analyzing WPA trace


    Hello,

    Just updated my Acer Aspire E17 laptop to windows 10 and it takes ages to boot, almost 5 minutes until it's usable. It was slow before on Win 8.1 but not this slow. Windows is installed on an HDD, Win10 version 1901(Build 18363.592).

    Quick specs: CPU i5-5200U, Nvidia GeForce 820M, 12GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD.

    I ran Windows Performance Recorder with Boot as Performance Scenario but I need help anaylzing it.

    Hello SlowBootWin10, and welcome to Ten Forums.

    You should perform clean boot state to find out if any startup service or program causing the slow boot problem.

    I did a Clean Boot and it was about 40 seconds faster but still needs over 2 minutes until I see Desktop.

    If you are using third-party antivirus program uninstall it to find out if problem resolves.

    Only Windows Defender is running. There was third party antivirus installed before but I uinstalled it and cleaned registry.

    Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk C: /f
    It will say that the disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next start = Yes
    Restart

    Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc...

    Agree with other replies. I see the machine is a Acer Aspire E17 so does that mean it is around 6 years old? If so then it might be getting old for a laptop/notebook and showing its age. You're not running out of disk space are you? Have you run both stages (including Clean up system files) of 'Disk Clean-Up' to recover disk space? Post-upgrade to Windows 10 there could be gigabytes of unnecessary data cluttering up your HDD.

    Also have you (ever) defragmented the disk?

    Has it been kept in a dusty atmosphere? If so then, over time, it might have collected dust inside affecting component cooling. Has it ever had an air-duster applied to clean it out?

    Incidentally I spotted your typo. You will be running Windows v1909 not v1901.

    Consider using DiskGenius to check for bad sectors and using Defraggler to defragment the disk if no bad sectors are found.
