Upgrading Ram - No beep - Overclocking needed?

    Hey all!

So basically I bought some new ram because I was having issues with my old ones. I bought 3 of the KVR16N11/4 and put them in the channels A1, B1 and C1. When I turned on my pc I got no beeps. I'm positive the ram is compatible, I did a lot of prior research, the only idea I have is that after a certain mhz, I think in this case 1600+ the ram needs to be overclocked for it to work.

On the manual of the motherboard itself, the general ram information states 1600(O.C) but in the detailed ram information only 1600. Could overclocking be the case? If so how can I try, I've never in my life overclocked before and what should I be careful of.

Direct instructions on how to OC would be very much appreciated. I know it's in bios but I obviously can't get in bios until I revert back to my 2x 2gig setup.

So in this case would I have to go in bios with my previous setup, change the settings, shutdown and put in new ram?

    Thank you

Only use 2 sticks, not 3. You should have 4 memory slots, 2 of the slots are 1 color and the other 2 slots are another color. You need to put 2 sticks in 2 of the same colored slots.

If you don`t have a motherboard manual to tell you which colored slots to use first to put the 2 new sticks in, go online and find it at Asus.com. A lot of boards (such as my Sabertooth) specifically say to use 1 color first if you only have 2 sticks. If you have 4 sticks, then it wouldn`t matter, you would just fill all the slots.

But you have to put 2 sticks in 2 of the same colored slots. Do not use 3 sticks. It`s either 2 or 4. Never 3.

We will work on the speeds after you get the PC working properly, and have the 2 sticks in the right slots.

Is this what you bought ?

    Kingston 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory Model KVR16N11/4 - Newegg.com

Put all the old memory in a drawer for now. 8GB is enough to get you going.

Report your progress as soon as you can.

My motherboard has 6 slots so a triple channel setup which is why I started with 3. But I did also very advice from a friend to try boot on 1 stick first before the others. I will try that as well as your way.

I put 3 sticks initially into the same color, as I have 3 black slots and 3 red.

Yes that is the ram I bought. I'll come back with results.

Thank you for quick reply addram. :)

Edit: So I tried only 1 stick of the new ram and still no post. I'm assuming 2 will give same result, perhaps I need to adjust in bios? I'm positive it's compatible.

Update: interesting thing happened, when I put my old ram back in, it booted up saying overclocking failed for some reason. Mind you I attempted no such thing, what could this mean.

    Old ram is KVR1333D3N9/2G (x2)

Set the Bios to Defaults, usually F5, it`ll tell you, then save & exit, usually F10. Usually it`s the tab to the far right in the Bios, just set it to Defaults, then Save & Exit

OK, so you have 6 slots. You`re gonna have to look at the manual and find out which slots have to be filled to get windows to boot. But looking at the board, I would think with either 3 red or 3 black slots filled it should boot.

I`ll go to Asus.com and try and get it.

Download the manual and see which slots have to be filled.

Yea I restarted my computer and was able to boot normally. I put 3 of the new sticks on 3 red and no beep.

I'm not sure what you mean by "which slots have to be filled". You mean to say certain number of slots have to be filled, 1 on its own might not be enough?

I downloaded the manual, I don't really see anything like that.

The things that stand out for me are

"Due to Intel spec definition, X.M.P. DIMMs and DDR3-1600 are supported for one DIMM per channel only." But I tried 1 stick on 1 dimm so that cant be it. And I have 3 channels anyways so theoretically for 3 stick should be fine right?

"6 DIMM Slots• 2 DIMM: Supports two (2) modules inserted into slot A1 and B1 as one pairof Dual-channel memory configuration.• 3 DIMM: Supports three (3) modules inserted into the red slots (A1, B1 andC1) as one set of Triple-channel memory configuration.• 4 DIMM: Supports four (4) modules inserted into the red slots (A1, B1 andC1) and the grey slot A2 as one set of Triple-channel memory configuration• 6 DIMM: Supports six (6) modules inserted into both the red slots and thegrey slots as two set of Triple-channel memory configuration."

Based on this information, maybe I need to try with 2 sticks? at least.

I randomly decided to check bios update and noticed

    "Version 09032011/10/10949.89 KBytes
    Rampage III Formula 0903 BIOS
    1. Improve memory compatibility
    2. Improve system stability
    3. Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at:"

    Could it help?

Also sorry but I couldn't find anything boot related, maybe im blind.

OK so it`s telling you which slots to put the 3 sticks in, You are doing good

As far as not being able to set the Bios to Defaults you have to look harder, all Bios have the ability to be set back to Defaults, and it`s almost always F5, then save & exit is almost always F10

There should be tabs across the top of the Bios, investigate each tab, one will give you the ability to set the Bios to Defaults.

Let`s get you through this before you even consider updating the Bios.

Ok thank you thank you I really am trying.

Oh no no, no issues with bios, i am all good, i am in windows now :) Only issue is the ram not working with no beep.

True I agree, bios update seems pretty scary so lets leave that. What should I try next?

I need to be little quick because if for some reason I can't get ram to work then I only have 30 day to return

What do you think in terms of comparability though, is this comparability issue with the new ram or my system need to be updated to adjust ram, which do you think?

Because I have found nothing that would make it 100% not compatible.

So do you have all 3 sticks in all 3 red slots and you can boot to windows ?

I think the ram should work fine.

Trust me, I know all about the 30 day return deal, we all do

The BIOS update says that it is to improve memory compatibility and system stability. I would try the BIOS upgrade FIRST.
