ASUS Z87 PRO Pulling Power From CMOS Battery W/ PSU Off

My ASUS Z87 PRO when powered off has two of the indication lights on the motherboard lit up and pulsating very lightly, because it's draining the battery slowly. I have to turn off the PSU to keep it the computer from turning itself back on right after turning it off (that's another problem I don't want to troubleshoot right now). So, anytime I turn off the PSU the motherboard is taking power from the CMOS battery, slowly draining it. Of course, if I turn the PSU back on it doesn't pull power from the battery anymore. Does anyone know why this is happening because I've never had this happen before on any other board. I've tried disconnecting all USB 2.0 and 3.0 from the board and even tried removing one stick of RAM at a time.

    Thanks for the help.

    Ben

You may have to play it a few times to see it pulsating, but as you can see the two lights and the red power button are lit up and this is completely running off the CMOS.

A motherboard does not drain from the CMOS battery when in standby, just a trickle to keep the RTC (Real Time Clock) running when the system is unplugged or power is lost. When you have the computer in a Standby mode, which is what you are seeing, whole plugged in those LED’s will exhibit that behavior. The manual expalins more.

It did drain my last battery in less than a month, I actually did not realize it was dead because it was replaced not very long ago. So, I did not realize this was why I was getting all this strange behavior of it forgetting BIOS settings and having to reset the clock often until I tested the battery. If what you're saying is correct why would it drain the battery that fast? I've been able to leave other motherboards unplugged for months without issues like this in the past.

Edit: other boards like my Asus P8P67 Pro REV 3.1

If your CMOS battery is draining for some kind of reason, you have a defective motherboard. The CMOS battery is there to only allow for a trickle charge when there is no power whatsoever to the device. That means that the device is unplugged and has no means of receiving AC power.

I'll have to look into it more, I still have a feeling it's one of the USB hubs or something like that drawing power for some reason. Audio couldn't be doing anything like that, right? I'm pretty certain the board itself is working just fine, I had it looked over by myself who has done a lot of IT work and my brother runs the IT depart for a school. Not to brag but we do both know a lot about computers. We ran all sorts of test on this board just 2 weeks ago.

Nothing but the CMOS can drain the battery. You either have a defective motherboard or are using bad CR2032’s that are just that.

Unless you shut your power supply off, it still provides low 5v power to your system. This is what is pwering the lights you see, not the battery. The issue you are having is not normal as people have already mention.

Unplug the USB devices and see if the LEDs go off.
On several of my motherboards, a powered USB hub WILL power the motherboard LEDs when the PSU is off and / or unplugged.
Even this new Asus MB x570 does it.
I have never had any CMOS battery drain.
    Check the CMOS jumper JIC.

This is a bios asus bug that lost the time and not actually a cmos battery failure.

It is fixed if u update to the latest bios.

So dont try to understand why the cmos battery drained fast.
