    Got a question.

I am doing my upgrade build with the parts I posted last tomorrow, and I was wondering... (Linky)

I will be using the 970 Evo M.2 as my system drive. Will I be able to simply clone my current install from my 840 Pro to the 970 Evo and will Windows then detect the new motherboard and system drivers and install by itself so I can have the system up and running? Or will such a drastic change (motherboard, CPU and RAM + M.2 drive) require me to go through the pain of reinstalling and updating Windows and all my apps?

OS is Windows 10 Pro x64.
You might try macrium reflect "restore to different hardware" feature from an image backup. I did this going from a 4790k to 8700k. I still had some difficulties with it assigning the wrong "driver" to the processor cores, but I was able to straighten it out with some amount of fiddling.

I did this because I have a fair number of licensed software that I didn't want to have to hassle with.

As for it being better than a clean install for other reasons, I don't agree. I can't tell you how many times I have restored from backup. Reflect will optimize the drive for you after restore or you can use the windows defragger optimize to trigger the garbage collection - which holds true for a fresh install as well. It doesn't take very long for the SSD to optimize.

I agree a clean install is always better.

There have been lots of comments on cloning or clean, I won't wade into that.

I noticed that he is also going to use a new motherboard ( I assume CPU ).

Won't this cause some issues with activation of license (unless it is retail) and should he not be linking license to MS id to reduce the potential issue.

Use Activation Troubleshooter in Windows 10

Lot's of "how does it work" tidbits in this video, besides what the title say's:
Pay attention specially about memory benchmarking scores, versus real world.
