Laptop connects to Internet but not to local network

I've been using an HP laptop on wifi to access a hard drive attached to my router. This has been working well for the past couple of years. Last week I took the laptop when I went on vacation. When I got home it said it was unable to reconnect to the drive on the router. As far as I know I had not changed any settings on either the laptop or my home network. It connects to the internet without a problem. A desktop on the same network connects to the router drive without a hitch, so the problem isn't in the router or the drive. The network is set up as private and discovery is turned on.

When I try to map a network drive the router doesn't show up on the list of folders; the only thing that shows up is the laptop.

I tried pinging the router and discovered I can't ping anything, either local or internet, unless I disable the Windows Firewall. If the firewall is on the ping returns "general failure". But turning off the firewall doesn't allow it to find any other devices.

The system is an HP 15-cs2073cl running Win10 21H2.

    Thanks.

The Unknown adapter Local Area Connection is the PIA (Private Internet Access) VPN connection. It's disconnected because I had turned off the VPN.

    C:\Windows\System32>tracert adobe.com

    Tracing route to adobe.com [23.59.174.213]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 General failure.

I finally bit the bullet and did a system restore to a point before the problem occurred. That did the trick, though it would have been nice to know what caused the problem in the first place. Thanks for the input, Samuria.

It could ping with the firewall off, but it still couldn't connect to any local nodes. Turning the VPN off or on didn't make any difference either. Oh well, at least the problem is solved for the time being. Thanks.

It doesn't make sense you have to turn off your firewall. Keep it on.
Is you LAN set up as Private? If you set it up as Public that could prevent you from accessing any other computer on your LAN.
Have you enabled file and printer sharing>
Are you sharing any folders or drives on your networked computers?

If your LAN is working correctly you should be able to ping each one by it IP address.
If you can do that then your LAN is working correctly.

I have not found that accessing the computers with the File Explorer > Network to be reliable. Instead I create shortcuts to each computer and access them that way. For example, the shortcut to the computer DarkMatter is \\DarkMatter. Some people create shortcuts to IP addresses but I find computer names easier to work with.
