Why is Windows Sharing so problemactic

    Hello
I have had a network of two pcs in my house for several years.
I just tried to add a third pc and now only on Computer is listed in my File Manager on all 3 machines

Aside from the basic Sharing Options in Windows there are lots of other settings to be checked.

    Why is it so complicated?

    Hello Digmen1,

Check the items in option 1 of the tutorial below to see if that may help to also see the other network computers.

    Thanks for that.
A tutorial - check list like that would be great
But it seems it was written for Windows 7, so I don't think I will use it, as none of the screen shots or options are relavent.

It was written for Windows 10, but can also apply to all.

Member Try3 has also written a checklist.
    Sharing folder isn't working

As to why it's so hard.. alas, we can't share our (lack of) insight into the MS MINDSET

Networking is tedious to set up, and somewhat fragile. Normally once set up and working, it's fine.. until something changes. And that 'something' might include a Windows update occasionally.

I will be of no help when it comes to Windows sharing. That's because I simply don't use it because I think it's a cluster ^&*, and my memberships on various tech forums over the years has solidified that observation.

Having said that, you may be interested in the following instead: Syncthing

In reference to: Firewall Setup — Syncthing documentation I would not do this but use ZeroTier One or something similar instead. Port forwarding and UPnP has its risks... There is a ZeroTier One Android App and Apple App.

I run my own TeamSpeak server using ZeroTier.

Being even more nerdier, you could use a third-party firmware like Asus Merlin or DD-WRT, etc and setup a router based LAN only OpenVPN. I use that, too. HAHAHA!

Use a DDNS to connect to your router's VPN with a DDNS name from noip or whatever. Free Dynamic DNS - Managed DNS - Managed Email - Domain Registration - No-IP

    Edit-

GOOD GRIEF! They hashed with SHA512! Collisions don't stand a chance. LOL! For God sakes, bitcoin is based on SHA256 and no one's breaking that anytime soon this millennium.

How is SHA-256 used in blockchain, and why?

File explorer has suffered from that chronic condition since Version 1803.
It is not exhibiting a network problem but a File explorer problem.
I don't use the File explorer, Network section any more.

    Because MS couldn't give a monkey's.

More likely because MS want you to share files via OneDrive, hence a not very subtle way of forcing the use of online Microsoft Accounts... with the additional possible benefit of a subscription for more online storage. Easy home networking is of no benefit to MS... unlike forced MSAs and OneDrive

    Cynical? Moi?

Networking was equally poorly explained in the nineties before OneDrive or MSAccounts existed.
I did not understand a thing about networks until I found a booklet by Belkin about setting up home networks. I turned its instructions into a checklist, set up a direct ethernet cable network of my own using it, amended it when I first got a router and have continued to update that checklist with new knowledge ever since.
