    Simple Network: Beginner Question #2

I have a dual boot desktop AMD Ryzen 5 2400G with the Production partition being 20H2 Build 19042.906 and the second partition being Insider Preview Dev Build 21343. Then there are two laptops; one is an HP Laptop 17" i5 with Windows 10 Home and a Lenovo Ideapad 14" Flex 4 with the same.

I want to be able to get into each of these from at least my desktop Production partition, but ideally, I could be on any one of the computers and get into another one.

I'm hoping it will be as easily done as @spunk advised the OP on his question "Simple Network: Beginner Question" (Yeah, I'm question #2) who has Windows 10 and Linux. I don't have Linux, so am not sure if I could follow Spunk's instructions.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, you need to work meticulously through option 1 here for each PC:
Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10

and set permissions as appropriate for folders you wish to be shared.

As they are all Win 10 do not enable SMB1.

Thanks, Dalchina. I searched tutorials yesterday, and didn't find that one. Guess I'm not a very good searcher.

    Good that you searched.

    Here's a (Google) search trick:

Use a kind of natural language search, but as a normal browser search:

    share files tutorial site:tenforums.com

    Simple Network: Beginner Question #2-1.png

    Magic!

    Have you succeeded?

I found one on youtube yesterday, which was pretty thorough, but confusing, so I left it for a later looksee.

Not yet. I have three computers to do, so it's going to take awhile.

Question: Since this is a dual boot system, will I need to do the same to my Insider Preview partition as I do to my Production partition?

    @dalchina

OK, I have the tutorial printed and am ready to start. I'll leave the Insider partition until I hear your advice on it.

    Thank you very much.

What about SMB? Both laptops are Home and I'm not sure I have any more pro licenses for them.

Each and every device connected to the network needs to be configured.

As I said, If Win 10, don't use SMB1. What concerns you about Home vs Pro?

The instructions said SMB can't be used on Home.

BTW, I didn't get to work on it yesterday and can't today either. My daughter and I have a garden and we moved a ton of soil from our pickup to the garden yesterday and have to spread and till it in today. Suitable days are in short supply this time of year. Rain tomorrow.

Edit: Here's what the instructions say:

4 Enable SMB Direct on each computer you want to share between. If you have an older USB network drive or connecting to a previous version of Windows (ex: "Windows 7") than Windows 10, then you will need to enable SMB1. (see screenshot below)

SMB Direct will not be available in the Windows 10 Home edition. You will need to enable SMB1 instead.

If you enable SMB1, be sure to uncheck Automatic Removal.

It is recommended you do not enable SMB1 unless absolutely necessary for security reasons.

If you enable SMB1, it will also enable and have the Computer Browser service to run which could potentially cause 10 minutes + delay in discovering a PC newly connected to the network.

...actually part of what you quoted was added by Brink on my prompting...

Simple- Win 10 only- no SMB1 needed.

(Just for interest- not very much- and don't worry about it - but you mentioned it...

...garden.. I've had some fruit trees delivered, so want to get them out.. yet there are now light flurries of snow every few hours...not settling.. a few days ago record high temps... ah well..
