    Networking between 2 computers

Windows version number desktop - 20H2 (OS Build 19042.685) , Laptop 1909 (OS Build 18363.1256)
    Hi Everyone,

I have 2 computers (next to each other), one is a desktop, one is a laptop, both running windows 10.

I want to connect them together using the network.

When I connect the laptop to the desktop it works lovely, I can get to the 'users' folder (as per capture attached) and then into my user folder and then all my files and folders.

However when I do it the other way round (desktop to laptop) it just goes to the Laptop and says 'this folder is empty'.

How do I get to the 'users' folder on the laptop from the desktop? Is it something I'm doing wrong on the laptop or the desktop?
Thanks very much for any help

It looks like you have not shared any folders on the laptop.

Thanks, I managed to get a bit further following the tutorial.
my desktop will now show the laptop 'Users' folder in the network window, when I click on it it shows the 'public folder' but I cannot get it to show my own user folder which is called 'rjsca'.

I have managed to get the 'rjsca' folder to show up separately but when I click on it it says as per the screen shot

also on the laptop the window here never seems to disappear.

    Any more help gratefully appreciated

    Rich,

I cannot see what is wrong.

I once put together a checklist of actions for creating a network. Perhaps going through that will reveal & correct the problem.

The proble is you are trying to share users folder these folders have special permissions on them so even if your on the pc you cant simply access other users folders. Share a folder outside the users profile when you share there are 2 things the share permissions and NTFS permission if they arnt set you get no where. by default users folder have strict ntfs permission

Okay, thanks, I will try to just share the folders that I think I will need to share.

It does work perfectly the other way round though - with the laptop 'looking at' the desktop

I share my users folders amongst all my computers. Was there something specific you were thinking of that is not covered by my list?

    Hi again,

Yes that worked, I can share an individual folder and it shows up in the 'network' on my desktop. I did this by right clicking and 'give access to' and also going properties - advanced properties and then ticking 'share'.

But also - even though I haven't changed anything, my folder inside my user folder called 'rjsca' now shows up in the User folder shown on my desktop and I can access it without it saying 'I don't have permission'

and the individual 'rjsca' folder is now accessible!

It really is a buggers muddle, there's no fathoming it!

    Rich,

Yes. It's often awkward for people.

By the way, in response to that other post, I have just shared another subfolder of my user's folder successfully - both ways.
    - I chose, for this experiment, C:\Users\%UserName%\3D objects
    - I have never used, set up, shared or anything this folder before.
    - I shared it using para 4 of my suggested procedure.
    - It worked without any problems.
    - I then did the same from the other computer and that also worked without any problems.

    I wrote that before seeing

I'm glad it has been resolved.

I use the procedure I linked you to every time I set a computer up. I have found it to be effective & dependable.

I think I benefit from having had a good network setup guide in about 2002 [by Belkin] and I have just built on that foundation ever since.
